This article describes different proposals to generate modulated pulsed signals with signal generators and analyze simulated devices with different types of signals using vector network analyzers. In particular, it tries to show when an analog signal generator is sufficient and when it is better to use a vector signal generator. It also discusses the capabilities of different techniques used by vector network analyzers.
