Melexis enhances thermal management with single-chip ASIL-B pre-controllers for oil pumps, coolant and water pumps, turbines, fans and valves.

Melexis has introduced new LIN pre-controllers for BLDC motors that combine a small size with high performance and power capacity for automotive mechatronic applications. The MLX81340 (32KB Flash) and MLX81344 (64KB Flash) integrate three driver channels of Hs (High Side) and Ls (Low Side). They drive external NFETs with a capacitance of up to 60nC to drive applications up to 500W.

Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, has expanded its offering of single-chip LIN motor controllers. They integrate the LIN communication interface, the Hs and Ls drivers and the protection mechanisms for the external power FETs. The MLX81340 and MLX81344 are available in 24mm x 4mm QFN4 and 32mm x 5mm QFN5 packages, compatible with very small footprint PCBs.

“Our family of LIN controllers allows customers to get a tailored solution for applications from less than 10 watts up to 1000 watts. They take advantage of single-chip integration that saves space, simplifies design, and improves reliability,” says Marc Lambrechts, Melexis Embedded Motor Driver Product Line Manager. "By offering the best combination of price and performance across a broad spectrum of applications, our innovative drivers enable customers to create feature-rich, competitive mechatronic solutions."

Integrated circuits

Both ICs take advantage of Melexis' high-voltage SOI technology. They integrate analog and digital circuitry with a driver stage containing Hs and Ls drivers, a charge pump, voltage control to protect external FETs, and current sensing. Including the LIN controller and physical layer, PWM generator, diagnostics, and watchdog, the ICs enable smooth and quiet Field Oriented Control (FOC) for BLDC motors. The MLX81340 and MLX81344 have been developed as ASIL-B SEooC (Safety Element out of Context) in accordance with ISO26262. It enables proper safety diagnosis and safe operation for demanding applications.

Support for developers working with the MLX81340 and MLX81344 includes a comprehensive LIN software communication stack, as well as application code examples that allow users to quickly start evaluating their mechatronic prototypes. The examples benefit from Melexis' expertise in driving Sensorless (Trusense™) or FOC motors to develop efficient, low acoustic noise operation.

Both ICs are AEC-Q100 qualified and specified over the operating temperature range of -40°C to 150°C.
