Power supplies for motorized fitness equipment applications

power supplies applications

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Home-Fitness equipment has been one of the most flourishing industries worldwide due to the closure of public gyms or fitness centers. This store closure and general lockdown has produced a high demand for home fitness equipment, especially motorized fitness equipment such as treadmills or ellipticals with LCD screens for video or live streaming training. These motorized fitness equipment typically use two separate AC/DC power sources to drive the motor and power the LCD screen with three common design references, which are directly related to the integrated AC/DC power sources.

Motorized Fitness Equipment Components and Requirements Power Supply Requirements
dc motor No fan or fan on/off control
earth leakage current <0,75mA
LCD Display 12-15Vdc / 60W
  1. DC motor: The main feature is that it uses maximum power for a few milliseconds until boot. After commissioning, it consumes about 50% less energy. It depends on the rated power of the built-in motor to choose a suitable power supply. The treadmill or elliptical motor is typically 200W and often runs on a 350W-400W rated power supply. The multi-function fitness equipment uses a higher power motor which needs a constant current limiting output power supply up to 1000W. Also, for home use, a fanless or fan-on/off-controlled power supply is necessary to reduce audible noise while the computer is idle.
  2. Earth Leakage Current: As with other household appliances, safety standards require the leakage current of the equipment to be less than 0,75mA per UL1647, which is the total leakage current of the two power supplies for the motor. CC and the LCD screen.
  3. LCD screen: In addition to video training and live streaming, the screen is also used to control equipment with a total power demand of 40-60W. The Class II input power supply is generally chosen because its leakage current is minimal, which does not increase the total leakage current of the equipment to meet the leakage current requirement of UL1647.

In short, motorized fitness equipment requires a fanless or fan on/off control function and a low leakage current power supply. Therefore, when selecting power supplies for the application, it is suggested to consider the aforementioned requirements. MEAN WELL, together with OLFER Electronics, offer several lines and series of products that are highly recommended for these applications.
