BD71847AMWV: Optimized Power Management IC for NXP Semiconductors i.MX 8M Mini Application Processors

It helps increase uptime and reduce the size of smart devices such as smart speakers, networked audio, and smart displays.
ROHM has announced the availability of the BD71847AMWV, a highly integrated and efficient power management IC (PMIC) that has been optimized for the i.MX 8M Mini family of application processors from NXP® Semiconductors, delivering exceptional performance in computing, audio, video and graphics. BD71847AMWV is the latest addition to ROHM's growing line of PMICs designed for NXP's i.MX application processors. With the BD-71837MWV, which was released a year ago to support the i.MX 8M Quad and Dual high-performance application processors, ROHM now has power solutions for all members of the i.MX 8M family. “ROHM is a valued partner of the i.MX ecosystem. The BD71847AMWV is a good choice for our i.MX 8M Mini application processor customers who aim to maximize performance. It is also available mounted on a reference card, providing a single-chip power solution optimized for processors,” said Leonardo Azevedo, Senior Director of Marketing for i.MX at NXP Semiconductors.
The i.MX 8M Mini application processors allow customers to add a voice interface to audio/video transmission devices at minimal cost. They integrate up to four Arm® Cortex®-A53 cores running at up to 1,8 GHz along with an Arm Cortex-M4 running at up to 400 MHz for low standby power consumption. Additionally, support for 1080p video processing, 2D/3D graphics, advanced audio features, and various high-speed interfaces make the i.MX 8M Mini ideal for a wide range of consumer and industrial applications. Leveraging ROHM's expertise in analog power and advanced BCD processing, the BD71847AMWV integrates all power rails required by the processor, as well as common system IO and DDR memory power supplies. In addition to DC/DC converters with industry leading 95% efficiency, the PMIC features a programmable power sequencer for flexible power control and management, a perfect hardware control interface for i.MX 8M Mini , a buffered sleep clock, protection functions, etc.
The high level of integration, customizations for the i.MX 8M Mini application processors, and programmability help reduce development time, reduce system component list cost, and minimize solution impact. In the future, ROHM will continue to expand its product portfolio to support future members of the i.MX 8M family and also offer optimized solutions for different applications and market segments.
Availability: March 2019 (samples), August (OEM quantities)
Key benefits 1. All-in-one system PMIC Optimized PMIC for i.MX 8M Mini application processors
The power rails of the BD71847AMWV are designed to meet the power requirements of i.MX 8M Mini application processors. The PMIC integrates 6 DC/DC buck converters, 6 LDOs, 1,8V/3,3V power switch for SDXC cards, 32 kHz crystal driver and buffered output clock, extensive monitoring and protection circuitry, and sequencer. Programmable logic and power state control. The high level of integration allows PMIC to power system memory and peripherals, reducing system bill-of-part cost and solution footprint. The 2,7V-5,5V input voltage range is compatible with a variety of power sources, from the single cell lithium-ion battery to a USB and wall adapter.

  1. Compact solution and low cost PCB design

In addition to integrating all the necessary power functions into a compact 56-pin 7mm x 7mm QFN package, the pinout is carefully designed to ensure easy connection to NXP's i.MX 8M Mini application processor and the DDR memory, considerably reducing design effort and risk. The integration of all necessary components reduces the number of external parts by 42 and the mounting area by 42% compared to other discrete solutions (assuming a type 3 PCB for mounting on one side ). With double-sided mounting, the size of the plate can be as small as 300mm2

  1. Configurability and programmability to allow optimization for a wide variety of system designs.

To support many different applications and use cases, the BD71847AMWV incorporates programmability into the power control sequencer and all power rails. Many operating parameters, such as output voltage, power state transitions, reset behaviour, etc., are OTP-configurable and/or software-programmable.
