By Luis Casado Freescale Semiconductor

Freescale's optimized software codecs solve the development of applications that handle audio and video for the i.MX31 and i.MX27 processors. These multimedia codecs are provided as fully functional, optimized software packages, ready to provide solutions for different types of applications, such as audio and video playback or recording, image capture and display. In the case of the i.MX31, two types of codecs are offered, purely software and software codecs that control the hardware accelerator built into the device. In the case of the i.MX27, they are software codecs that control the hardware accelerator codecs included in the processor. Freescale's i.MX family processors based on ARM core, in addition to being highly popular in multimedia applications, are also widely used in industrial applications, where human-machine interfaces are improving day by day and include more advanced features. Its use is also common in video surveillance applications, audio and video transmission of entertainment in public transport, access control, home automation interfaces, etc. Freescale multimedia codecs are embeddable in Windows Embedded CE operating systems, integrating into Windows Media Player (Direct Show Framework) and Linux operating systems (Gstreamer multimedia Framework).
