Rohde & Schwarz introduces two new source measurement units (SMUs) to tap into a market where the test and measurement specialist has not been present until now. The new R&S NGU201 and R&S NGU401 source measurement units simultaneously supply and measure current and voltage with high precision. The two-quadrant R&S NGU201 is used to test batteries of wireless devices. It automatically switches from source to sink mode, if a positive input voltage is defined. The four-quadrant R&S NGU401 can also perform this changeover with negative voltages and allows supply metering from various types of power supplies.

The ever-expanding Rohde & Schwarz portfolio of specialty power supplies continues with the first two models in the high-precision R&S NGU series of source measurement units. The units' innovative current-feedback amplifier technology provides maximum sensitivity and accuracy to reliably measure currents from nanoamps to amps in a single sweep. To quickly handle the rapid load changes typical of battery-powered communications devices between sleep and transmit modes, the R&S NGU has an optimized control loop charge that provides an unsurpassed recovery time of less than 30 μs with minimal overshoot

The R&S NGUs include six current ranges from 10 µA (with 100 pA resolution) to 10 A (with 10 µA resolution). An accuracy of 0,025% is achieved in all ranges. Voltage is measured with 10 µV resolution in the 20 V range and 1 µV resolution in the 6 V range. For the typical measurement of capacitance at the input of the device under test, the R&S NGU offers a mode variable capacitance that can be adjusted in 1 µF to 470 µF steps to compensate for capacitance so that current is displayed as if it were measured directly on the device. All devices up to 20V, 8A and 60W are also supported.

The four-quadrant R&S NGU401 is the expert for semiconductor testing. It provides source measurements of any equipment that requires source and sink voltages in the range -20 V to +20 V. In addition to the voltage regulation mode of power supplies, the R&S NGU includes a fast current regulation mode to prevent damage to current sensitive devices such as LEDs or other semiconductors. Using an external arbitrary generator, the R&S NGU401 becomes an AC power supply and allows simulation of disturbances (glitches) or unstable power supplies up to 1 kHz.

The two-quadrant R&S NGU201 is optimized for battery discharge analysis of any battery-powered device, including mobile phones, tablets and the full range of IoT equipment. Design engineers can use it to simulate real battery characteristics. Once the characteristics of the battery model have been defined, they can be reused whenever necessary. It supports even fast charging applications with its maximum current of 8 A.

The R&S NGU series has dedicated power supply measurement features and includes, in addition, other elaborate features common to all Rohde & Schwarz specialty power supplies. The market leading data acquisition rate of 500 kmsamples per second offered by the FastLog feature captures voltage and current levels every 2 μs, detecting even the smallest intermittent disturbances. With the built-in digital voltmeter option, users can check voltages at any point on the device in addition to the input voltage.

The new R&S NGU201 and R&S NGU401 fountain measurement units are part of the R&S Essentials catalog and are now available from Rohde & Schwarz and its authorized distributors. For more information visit:
