The new 4K high-resolution video standard arouses great interest at the International Audiovisual Technology Show “BIT Broadcast 2014”

The new solutions in 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) from Rohde & Schwarz for production, post-production and storage of multimedia content have aroused a lot of interest among the visitors of the event.

Madrid, April 20, 2014 — 4K is the new video resolution for television and digital cinema; It is also known as Ultra High Definition, and is equivalent to a resolution of 3840×2160 (8.294.400 pixels), that is, four times more than the number of pixels present in televisions marketed today for high definition.

Rohde & Schwarz offers a complete range of solutions that help the broadcast industry (network operators, TV manufacturers, video/film production companies, etc.) to adapt to the new 4K high resolution standard and has shown all its experience in this field during the BIT Broadcast 2014 that today celebrates its last day of opening.

Among R&S's most outstanding products, the ingest Server, playout and transcoding VENICE, which offers significant benefits to broadcasters, particularly in live TV studio environments. The VENICE server opens up new possibilities for Avid outgest and studio playout with resolutions up to 4K. Reduced processing times between ingest and playout, along with greater redundancy, increase the flexibility and efficiency of the video production workflow.

La mastering station CLIPSTER has showcased its extensive set of DCI tools on Broadcast including: subtitling, high frame rate stereoscopy and Dolby Atmos. Additionally Clipster is fully compatible with the innovative AS-02 and FMI standards in resolutions up to 4K.

Rohde & Schwarz DVS has also presented its new solution SpycerBox Cell for storage of multimedia contents, whose scalable and modular design allows performance to work in formats up to 8K. SpycerBox Cell offers unprecedented performance in such a small density. It measures just 1U and has 30 internal drives that can even be hot-swapped even when working in playback operations like TV studios or post production. It has a redundant architecture and offers guaranteed speeds to work with compressed or uncompressed files in formats SD, HD, 2K, 4K, 8K and beyond.

Rohde & Schwarz has also presented its new header R&S AVHE100, a system already fully compatible with the new HEVC (H.265) encoding standard for 4K and HD. Unlike conventional headends, the R&S AVHE100 integrates all the essential functions for encoding and multiplexing into very few hardware components, making it a one of the most compact systems on the market. Its basic components are the R&S processing platform AVS100 and the R&S AVG100 audio and video gateway. In just two height units, these two components can be configured, for example, as a DVB-S2 headend including several inputs for HD-SDI or satellite signals, or as decoders and encoders for up to 6 HD and 10 SD programs, as multiplexers or also as a workflow-oriented bedside management system.

Rohde & Schwarz's test and measurement equipment also already supports the development and production of 4K electronic equipment. The broadcast metering center R&S BTC offers users an all-in-one measurement environment for virtually all audio, video, and multimedia applications. The system also analyzes audio/video in real time. Its modular and scalable concept allows the system to be adapted to the requirements of each user. It even supports the transmission of 4K signals to a set-top box or TV.
