Increased speed and cost-effectiveness in IIoT with IEC 63171-6 compliant Amphenol single-pair Ethernet connectors available within the Rutronik offering

ethernet connectors

Amphenol's SPE connectors provide a cost-effective path to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)

Rutronik adds to its offering Amphenol's Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) connectors for industrial applications, which enable direct Ethernet connection to peripheral devices, from sensors and actuators to cameras for vision systems operating at speeds of up to 1 Gb/s. The range consists of robust SPE connectors, available in right angle or vertical versions. In this way, they can be easily mounted on printed circuit boards. Combined with field-terminable connectors, Amphenol offers a fully protected interface with metal fasteners. Current carrying capacity up to 4 A supports PoDL (Power over Data Link) up to 1 km. This makes it possible to dispense with slow, complex and expensive fieldbus connections and protocols, while simplifying and standardizing new and existing industrial network systems.

As the number of sensors requiring transmission speeds that BUS systems can no longer guarantee grows, the need for a more powerful and streamlined infrastructure increases significantly. Furthermore, existing Ethernet infrastructures are not affordable for most field applications. In this case, the focus is on cables, connectors, and device components. With Amphenol's SPE connectors, these structures are significantly optimized and costs are saved. In addition to data transmission via Ethernet, simultaneous power supply of end devices via Power over Data Line (PoDL) is possible.

Until now, two copper pairs were required for Fast Ethernet (100 MB) or four copper pairs for Gigabit Ethernet. Amphenol's SPE connectors open up completely new possibilities and areas of use for Industrial Ethernet, especially in automation and railway technology. The miniaturized SPE standard interface for industrial applications can effectively reach all sensors and actuators in use in combination with the thin SPE cables.
It operates on an input range of 4 to 36 VDC and a nominal supply voltage of 5, 12 or 24 V. The series is available in a thermally optimized QFN package with an integrated shielded inductor. The RPY-1.5Q can be used at a junction temperature of -40°C to +125°C without any problem.

Summary of the most important parameters:

• Full compatibility with IEC 63171-6 connections from other approved vendors ensures future compatibility and investment protection.
• Single-pair cables reduce cost, weight, and space requirements compared to 2-pair and 4-pair cables.
• Mechanically robust and secure fixing with 360° protection for superior performance in harsh environments.
• Field-terminable IDC connectors provide installation flexibility.
• SPE eliminates the need for expensive protocol conversion gateways.

SPE connectors, as well as other Amphenol products, are available on the Rutronik24 website.
