Today the incessant appearance of new smaller, faster and smarter electronic products is based on the increase in the data transmission speed of devices within “digital systems”, whether the system in question is a video game or a set of servers. Bandwidth and data transmission speed is essential for applications that require intensive computing capacity.
Serial technology has outperformed previous parallel bus architectures and has proven to be the most efficient and economical way to route data within a system (Figure 1). Serial data transmission speeds have already surpassed the challenge of what was once the 2,5Gb/s barrier and are now steadily heading towards 10Gb/s and even beyond. This trend places new demands on designers and their tools.
