Total and Microsoft announced that they have agreed to collaborate as strategic partners to foster digital transformation and support progress towards zero emissions.
The active development of Microsoft and Total in their respective areas of expertise and their innovation projects provides many opportunities for cooperation over a long period of time:

• Total's global presence and market knowledge can support Microsoft's sustainability goals, including its 2025 renewable energy goal, and contribute to the energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction sacrifices of its data centers. .

• Total will further leverage Microsoft cloud platforms. Total has decided to accelerate its IT transformation and harness the power of Azure for digital transformation projects and the “Total Digital Factory”. It will expand and enrich your current work environment, based on Microsoft Office 365, providing cooperation and productivity solutions for your employees and your operations. Additionally, you will explore the value of the “Power Platform” in automating business processes, reducing costs, and enabling easier access to data for your developers.

• Explore and also co-innovate in areas of collaboration around sustainability, further digital transformation and artificial intelligence solutions that accelerate the transition to a zero emission economy, for example, the deployment of low carbon technologies. As part of its sustainability goals, Microsoft aims to eliminate its reliance on diesel fuel by XNUMX. Total, through its subsidiary Saft, will support Microsoft in developing a long-term roadmap for non-diesel operations, initially by helping Microsoft assess the suitability of various Total technologies as part of Total's portfolio of assets. Onsite Backup Power from Microsoft, including:

• Diesel Genset Displacement: Microsoft sees large-scale batteries as a key component in its drive to eliminate reliance on diesel fuel, which is used in generators to provide backup power to data centers. Microsoft and Total have entered into a partnership to assess the long-term feasibility of deploying batteries as backup power for mission-critical infrastructure. This evaluation is being conducted with the assistance of Saft, the world leader in battery backup.

• Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) batteries play an essential role in Microsoft's data center infrastructure. Saft's batteries will provide additional values to help Microsoft improve its specifications for its UPS distributors and ultimately meet its sustainability goal. Those values are energy savings, increased security, lower environmental impact, and a self-powered monitoring system to ensure optimized system availability.

Microsoft has publicly committed to using 35 percent renewable energy by 2025. Total's ambition is to achieve 100 GW of renewable electricity capacity by 2030 and nearly XNUMX GW by XNUMX. Total will help Microsoft secure renewable energy through power purchase agreements (PPAs). A first PPA of forty-seven MW has been agreed for Microsoft's Spanish operations.

Microsoft and Total are also working on emerging mission-critical technologies for a zero emissions path and digital solutions that can accelerate their adoption.

“The rapid development of Total and Microsoft in their areas of expertise provides many opportunities for cooperation for both companies, which are at the forefront of the fight against climate change,” said Patrick Pouyanné, President and CEO of Total. “We are committed to bringing our expertise through the sale of green electricity to help Microsoft achieve its sustainability goals, and we are pleased to rely on Microsoft cloud and AI solutions to accelerate our digital transformation. This is essential to drive progress towards a world with zero emissions”.

"We have a great opportunity to use advances in digital technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft. "Our strategic partnership with Total will apply the comprehensive power of Microsoft cloud platforms to accelerate Total's transition to new energy and meet sustainability goals."
