Examine the power consumption of IoT devices to optimize battery life
Keysight Technologies has announced new event-based power analysis software that helps optimize battery life for IoT devices by analyzing power consumption at the subsystem level.
The battery life of portable devices is important, but optimizing this life can be challenging and time consuming. R&D and design validation engineers need to capture the power consumption of hardware subsystems and analyze how an IoT device performs in a multitude of scenarios and weather conditions. They need to identify the precise design changes in hardware, software, or firmware required to optimize battery life, and then iterate to test the effects of each design change.
What is Keysight software?
Keysight's X8712A solution, working in conjunction with KS833A2A Event-Based Power Analysis Software, enables these engineers to analyze the power consumption of an IoT device and provides precise visibility into how the IoT device is performing over time. the subsystem level, such as its current consumption profile. It offers an intuitive visualization tool, through the system software Keysight's PathWave, as well as a new progressive data logging mode that allows users to capture up to eight days of data to understand device behavior and current draw profiles over many operating cycles.
"Keysight's enhanced event-based power analysis software brings three modes of data capture to the X8712A IoT Device Battery Life Optimization solution," said Tan Boon Juan, vice president and general manager of the Measurements business Keysight General Purpose Electronics. “These modes provide the ability to capture information with high fidelity and analyze rapid events, being able to narrow down a specific duration of the measurement and capture huge amounts of data. Using a combination of these modes, users can expand their understanding of how their IoT device works to make informed design decisions to manage power efficiency and optimize their device for optimal battery life.”
Keysight's X8712A software lets users view the current draw profile at the subsystem level using single capture, shot catch, or continuous capture data capture modes to determine the amount of power consumed by the device and warn quickly identify weak points in the design.
Keysight's KS833A2A software offers the next key benefits
• Ability to catch the active current draw of an IoT device when it changes state between its active, inactive, or sleep modes with a patented technology of continuous measurement range from amps to nano amps over multiple days, generating an overview of the load consumption profile.
• Automatic relationship of the load consumption profile with the radiofrequency or direct current (RF/DC) events of a subsystem, providing days of measurement data and its registration, as well as a graphical display to simplify the subsequent custom analysis.
• Automatic calculation of battery life based on load consumption profile, removing the sacrifices of manual calculation and speeding analysis time.
• Easy test replication to verify design changes and their impact on battery life.
• The systematic and objective quantification of the improvement in current consumption makes it possible to equate the behavior of different versions of software, firmware or hardware.
