Melexis expands its offer of next-generation inductive position sensors

melexis inductive sensors

Melexis presents the MLX90513. This exceptionally accurate inductive sensor IC is specially designed for automotive pedal and steering applications. Thanks to the MLX90513, this cutting-edge technology is no longer reserved for a select audience. This ASIL C sensor interface incorporates on-chip digital signal processing to improve delay-free performance.

For many position sensing applications, the combination of high accuracy and complete immunity to stray fields is the holy grail. Your search is finally over.

PERFORMANCE

Melexis' new MLX90513 position sensor offers an accuracy of ±0,1% at full scale (±0,36˚ in a rotary implementation with a 360˚ range). Additionally, its sub-20 µs latency, which can be reduced to zero programmatically, enables a fast control loop to be implemented, ensuring superior system responsiveness. This inductive ASSP features native immunity to stray electromagnetic fields (ISO 11452-8 requirements). At the same time, the sensitivity of this sensor is not affected by thermal drift.

FLEXIBLE OUTPUT

The possibility of configuring the output allows position detection data to be supplied as analogue ratiometric signals, PWM, SENT or SPC. This means that exit protocols related to many different application criteria can be addressed. It is the only inductive position sensor on the market that has an SPC output. The option with a tick time of 0,5 µs (SENT or fast SPC) is another differentiating element, which no other inductive sensor can currently offer. The ability to perform pulse shaping in PWM, SENT and SPC modes is valuable as it reduces electromagnetic emissions.

APPLICATIONS

Uses for the MLX90513 include:

  • accelerator/gas/brake pedal positioning
  • steering wheel angle positioning
  • angled positioning of valves or actuators
  • linear applications with long stroke lengths (up to 30 cm).

The importance of functional safety has been taken into account (ISO 26262), with the sensor being compatible with system integration up to ASIL D. In addition, the MLX90513 can be used together with Melexis magnetic sensors to provide redundancy to the system, since These devices will not interfere with each other (generating crosstalk).

STURDINESS

The MLX90513 is supplied in a compact TSSOP-16 package. Its working temperature range goes from -40oC to +160oC, allowing it to be installed in adverse application environments. The three-phase arrangement of the coils improves linearity thanks to harmonic filtering. The 32-point linearization of the device allows angular nonlinearity errors to be equalized. Overvoltage and reverse polarity protection further underlines its operational robustness. Thanks to the use of inductive measurement methods, system implementations can be much more agile and integration is easier.

“Tier-tier suppliers want access to high-precision position sensing technology,” says Lorenzo Lugani, Product Director of Inductive Sensors at Melexis. “Through our MLX90513 device, inductive position sensing solutions are available to a broader audience.”
