In 2005 with the Toyota Prius a reality as a hybrid vehicle (HV), the prospects for the automotive electronics industry were still very timid only 5 years ago. Regarding the development of power electronics for HV and fully electric EVs or PHV plug-in hybrids, they only forecast 1% of the world market in 2020 in the most optimistic case. Today in 2010, even manufacturers with the most traditional approach to power such as BMW or Daimler accept a 2% scenario in 2020 and Renault, as a challenge from its CEO Carlos Goshn, proposes 20% of its production totally electric. The great driver is ecology and energy independence. The electric vehicle will mean an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions per kilometer, compared to the current European average.
