AVL and Rohde & Schwarz announce strategic partnership Vehicle in the Loop

Rohde & Schwarz and AVL have intensified their collaboration with the integration of a Rohde & Schwarz radar test system into the AVL DRIVINGCUBE™. They thus offer new possibilities for testing radar-based ADAS systems and validating autonomous driving functions on a "Vehicle-in-the-Loop" test platform.

Complex driving scenarios can be created and tested in a safe and reproducible environment. Validation of complex advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving (AD) functions such as emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and highway driver assistant in all driving scenarios Driving and climatic conditions require numerous functional and non-functional tests and, in addition, it can be dangerous if they are carried out on the road. On the other hand, the new challenges posed by automated driving mean that the usual tests under real conditions can often no longer be carried out on the road. That is why it is necessary that the test methods are carried out virtually using Xin-the-loop (XIL) strategies such as AVL DRIVINGCUBE™.

AVL DRIVINGCUBE™ allows both simulation and testing of real vehicles on the roller drive train platform. It offers a new way to speed up the validation and approval process for ADAS/AD systems. The key concept of this solution is to use the real vehicle in a virtual environment taking into account all the pieces of the “grasp, plan, act” chain. Connecting the virtual environment with the real embedded sensors requires state-of-the-art simulation technology. The conditions on the test platforms are completely different from those in a separate sensor lab. Following their collaboration on GNSS simulation, AVL and Rohde & Schwarz join forces again for radar target simulation on the AVL DRIVINGCUBE™. The radar test system opens up a huge range of possibilities for testing the characteristics of radar-based ADAS systems and ensures the safety of automated driving functions with "Vehicle-in-the-Loop" test platforms.

Innovative antenna array technology allows radar sensors to generate complex artificial objects at different distances and with variable radial velocity, size and azimuth, without the need to physically move the antennas or devices. The fast-response real-time interface and seamless integration into AVL's virtual toolchain allow even the most demanding, complex and dangerous driving scenarios to be created and tested.

The system is fully future-proof thanks to its modular and scalable concept, which means that the same test platform can be used for all types of vehicles with a different number of radar sensors and different sensor models. This solution is used for the validation and application of functions such as adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane keeping (LKA) and other functions of ADAS or AD systems. Furthermore, NCAP scenarios can be validated in a safe and reproducible environment. This strategic collaboration between AVL and Rohde & Schwarz represents an innovative solution for testing and 1/2 validation of radar-based ADAS and AD systems.
