New family of 8-bit and 32-bit FLEXIS microcontrollers from Freescale
By Luis Casado of Freescale Semiconductor

Freescale launches a new set of microcontrollers based on existing 8 and 32-bit architectures (S08 and Coldfire) with the fundamental feature of being compatible with each other. This allows the migration of applications from 8 to 32 bits or vice versa with just a few 'clicks' of the mouse, enabling complete reuse of the developed code. The designer will be able to use the same hardware development tool (BDM) and software (CodeWarrior for MCU V6.x) in his application thanks to the compatibility of packaging and pins, and with minimal changes -or in no cases- in the code, thanks to full peripheral compatibility. Use an 8-bit solution, a 32-bit solution, or both depending on the needs of the application.
