  • Saft has started delivering MRX nickel batteries to Alstom to provide onboard backup power for 183 trains that will run on three new metro lines.
  • The battery systems will guarantee the continuity of power for the safety and comfort of the passengers, as well as the start of the train in the event of a power outage.

Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, has started the delivery of battery backup systems to Alstom Metropolis metro trains destined for lines 15, 16 and 17 of Europe's largest transport project – Grand Paris Express. Saft has already supplied the first 10 battery systems for five trains out of a total of 183, required for three new lines (15, 16 and 17) by 2030.

The batteries will power on-board signaling and control, security lighting, door control, communication systems, as well as ventilation, air conditioning, lighting and USB charging sockets.

Each battery system will provide a capacity of 130 amp hours (Ah) and is based on the latest version of their MRX nickel batteries, complete with accessories and battery case.

The batteries are designed to provide a long life of up to 20 years, as well as high reliability for a low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). In addition, being compact in size, they allow Alstom to free up space in the passenger compartment.

Milan Sima, Saft's General Manager for the rail market, said: “Saft's batteries have been on board regional trains in Paris for more than 80 years. In 1985, all regional and metro trains were already equipped with our batteries. Today, Saft is proud to be on board Alstom's trains with MRX batteries that will offer safety and reliability to passengers on lines 15, 16 and 17 for decades to come.".
