Microchip launches the industry's first comprehensive security solution for Amazon Web Services cloud-connected IoT devices.

Key aspects:

• The pre-configured ECC508 is the easiest way to create mutual authentication connections for those IoT devices connected to Amazon Web Services (AWS)

• The development kit supports the AWS mutual authentication model, making it easy to connect to IoT AWS

• The ECC508 helps meet safety standards during the prototyping and pre-production phases.

• Personalization of devices during production ensures the security of information on end devices.

• Simplifies the implementation of security best practices, from the evaluation phase to production.

Microchip announces the first comprehensive security solution industry benchmark for cloud-connected Internet of Things (IoT) devices Amazon Web Services (IoT AWS). Microchip and AWS collaborated to develop this end-to-end solution that enables IoT devices to support the IoT AWS mutual authentication security model. Using Microchip's new security solution will allow companies to implement security best practices from the evaluation phase to production. The solution provides a high level of security, simplifies the supply chain, and is one of the simplest ways to connect to the AWS cloud today.

Currently, third-party manufactured devices that connect to the AWS IoT service must take specific actions to comply with the advanced security model. First, they must pre-register security authorization on AWS servers in order to create a trust model. Second, each IoS device must generate unique cryptographic keys that are mathematically linked to the security authorization pre-registration. Finally, these unique device keys must remain secret for the life of the device. During mass production, generating and managing these unique keys can be very challenging in the production chain, particularly when third parties with different levels of trust and compliance are involved.

Microchip's comprehensive security solution manages this process during all three phases of production. First, the AT88CKECC kit will allow customers to achieve AWS mutual authentication model security standards and easily connect to the AWS IoT platform during the evaluation and engineering phases. Second, the AWS-ECC508 device allows security standards to be met during the prototyping and pre-production stages. Finally, the devices will be customized for the production stages, which will guarantee the security of information in customer applications.

Customers simply need to solder the device to the board and connect it from the I2C to the main microcontroller (MCU) operating with an SDK kit (Software Development Kit) from AWS powering the ECC508 device for IoT AWS. Once this is complete, there is no need to upload the unique keys and certificates required for authentication during device production, as the AWS-ECC508 comes pre-configured to be recognized by AWS without any intervention. All the information is contained in the small (3x2mm) cryptographic device, easy to apply.

AWS and the ECC508 appliance complement each other naturally with comprehensive mutual authentication security capabilities. The device is resistant to environmental factors and tampering, including protection against expert intrusion attempts. In addition, the device features a high-quality random number generator, internal generation of unique security keys, and the ability to accommodate various diverse production streams in the most cost-effective manner. A typical IoT device consists of a small [8-bit] battery-powered microcontroller. It is usually constrained by resources such as a central processing unit (CPU) to provide low latency response, memory, and code space for security protocols and to calculate how much power they consume in order to preserve the vida use of the batería. The ECC508 device has a low power cryptographic agnostic processor that makes it compatible with the largest number of resource constrained IoT devices.

The AWS-ECC508 Kit (AT88CKECC-AWS-XSTK) is available today for $249 each.

The AWS-ECC508 (ATECC508A-MAHAW-S and ATECC508A-SSHAW-T) is available in UDFN and SOIC packages and is available for sampling and mass production today.
