Melexis Announces a Second Generation Triaxis® Resolver Motor Position Sensor

The new MLX90380 offers high-speed operation and flexible positioning through the axis
Melexis announces a second generation resolver motor position sensor based on its proprietary Triaxis® Hall effect magnetic sensing technology. The new MLX90380 IC is compatible with any brushless motor – such as permanent magnet synchronous motors and brushless DC motors – thanks to its ability to measure absolute angle. This device is ideal for the growing number of automotive applications arising as a result of the increased degree of electrification of vehicles. The precision sensor is well-suited for high-speed rotary applications, such as automotive electric power steering engines and superchargers, thanks to its 2μs sampling and 8μs output refresh rates. The MLX90380 provides Sin and Cos analog ratiometric outputs and, among options, also offers the ability to select sensitivity between 10mT and 70mT, as well as three different settings for the magnetic field axis.
The MLX90380 is unique in that it can be mounted in end-of-shaft or through-shaft applications. By simply selecting the correct option code, designers can now measure rotation and position at any point along the axis using a ring magnet and the MLX90380. Peter Vandersteegen, Product Manager, commented on the new MLX90380: “This second generation Triaxis® based device represents a significant step forward, especially in terms of performance and mounting flexibility. Modern applications increasingly force designers to work in confined spaces, especially in the car. This compact device offers numerous options that allow designers to provide solutions for high-performance rotary measurements.”
The MLX90380 works between -40°C and +150°C, making it ideal for applications in harsh environments such as industry and automotive. The standard version is supplied in a small SOIC-8 package and a fully redundant version is also available in SOIC-16 package. A version is also available in a DMP-4 package for applications without a PCB, such as direct mounting on a motor. Documentation is available on ISO26262 for safety critical automotive applications. The MLX90380 can be used with Melexis' MLX81310 or MLX81315 small driver ICs to actuate and sense the position of a smart valve, thus achieving efficient battery or motor cooling. It also supports Melexis MLX81205-06-07-08 ICs for brushless DC motors in smart pump rotor position tracking, efficiently and dynamically control the pump with the right torque.
