Cesinel Special Project: Soft Starters for high power compressors

CESINEL has just completed a project that has filled us with pride, and no wonder, since the technical and functional requirements represented a huge qualitative leap over the state of the art. It is a custom order that has forced us to draw from us all the ingenuity and experience to deliver a product that has been a challenge both in its design and in its construction. We refer to the construction of a soft starter for large induction motors.

Our client is installing two large compressors to supply compressed air to his facility. These compressors are driven by 4,0 MVA induction motors, operating at 6,6 kV. In order to start these huge motors, it is necessary to have a state-of-the-art soft-start system, which is why the client asked us for a solution proposal given our experience and reputation in the field of high-power electronics.

The project presented several important challenges: The great power required during start-up, the reduced space available and high levels of demand in terms of reliability and time required for maintenance and troubleshooting.

These challenges were answered satisfactorily by CESINEL, resulting in our technical proposal being selected among all those submitted. The high power softstarter features several important innovations that are worth noting:

•Very compact design for the power of the equipment.

•Power electronics mounted on a removable carriage for very quick replacement. The solution provided is an excellent design that responds in a very elegant and efficient way to the electrical, mechanical and thermal technical requirements while providing high performance and operational safety.

•Air cooling system with natural circulation without the need for fans.

• State-of-the-art compact control logic that includes all motor protection functions in addition to those necessary for starting and stopping. The entire process of design, construction, testing and verification of the equipment has been carried out at our facilities in Spain and with the collaboration of our team of collaborators and national suppliers.
