Microchip Launches a Free Cloud-Based Development Platform Offering the Easiest Way to Get Started with PIC® Microcontrollers

Main features:

  • The MPLAB® Xpress integrated development environment (IDE) is the most comprehensive Internet development environment on the market
  • The only cloud-based IDE with built-in code configurator
  • Hardware development with any USB-enabled PC, laptop, or tablet using Microchip's MPLAB Xpress evaluation board
  • Designers can create an application, simulate, compile code, program, and debug a microcontroller.
  • No downloads, registrations or setup required to start designing
  • Presented at the Microchip booth at Embedded World (Hall 1, Booth 1-510)

Microchip announces its cloud-based integrated development environment (IDE) MPLAB® Xpress. This web-based development platform is the easiest way to get started with PIC® microcontrollers with no downloads, registrations, or configuration required to start designing. Microchip's free, cloud-based IDE brings the best-known feature set of the award-winning MPLAB X IDE to Internet-connected PCs, laptops, and tablets. MPLAB Xpress offers the most comprehensive feature set on the market, including a library of Microchip-validated code examples, interface to MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC) 3.0 for GUI-based peripheral configuration, automatic generator code, built-in MPLAB XC compilers, support for programmer/debugger hardware, and 10 GB of secure Internet storage with a myMicrochip account. Users can easily migrate their projects to the full downloadable MPLAB X IDE. In addition, the MPLAB Xpress Community allows developers to share their code, design ideas and knowledge.

Cloud-based hardware development is accomplished by connecting any USB-compatible PC, laptop, or tablet to tools like the MPLAB Xpress evaluation board. This development board incorporates an onboard programmer, a PIC16F18855 microcontroller, and a mikroBUS™ header to expand the system with more than 180 MikroElektronika Click™ cards.

The MPLAB Xpress IDE is also compatible with Microchip's Curiosity Development Board, an inexpensive tool with an integrated programmer and debugger, as well as expansion options for plug-in cards and external connectivity. In addition, this online IDE can be used in conjunction with Microchip's popular PICkit™ 3 in-circuit programmer/debugger, which provides programming and debugging capabilities for more than 1.000 PIC microcontrollers.

The Internet-based MPLAB Xpress eliminates installation time and allows users to fully develop an application in a matter of minutes. Users can open a browser and quickly generate code with the built-in MPLAB code configurator, which is built-in with MPLAB Xpress. This is a feature not available in any other cloud-based IDE. Users can check out that code below with the included simulator, compile the code, and then program and debug their target microcontroller.

The MPLAB Xpress Community allows users to get their project started quickly, as well as solve problems and inspire others by sharing ideas and knowledge. The “Samples” section provides easy, searchable access to microcontroller code developed and validated by Microchip engineers, including configuration, basic functions, and advanced projects. Designers can contribute to this knowledge base, making their stored projects accessible to the rest of the user community. To facilitate discussion and collaboration, an MPLAB Xpress User Forum and Wiki are also available.
