Precoding and 3GPP Long-Term Evolving Spatial Multiplexing MIMO Systems

By Randall T. Becker, Applications Engineer

MIMO (multiple input multiple output) technology has been shown to provide higher data rates with higher spectral efficiency [1, 2]. The performance of a MIMO system is directly related to the received signal-to-interference-to-noise ratio (SINR) and the characteristic correlation properties of the multipath channel and antenna configuration ]. The wireless channel can cause low SINR on some of the MIMO receive antennas, but system performance can be improved by applying channel shaping at the transmitter.
