Vicor Corporation Expands Its Line of Picor Cool-Power Zero-Voltage Switching Isolated DC/DC Converter Modules with New Power Solutions

These complete module solutions incorporate new enhancements when coupled with Picor QuietPower active EMI filters for use in demanding applications with limited space available in the industrial and aerospace/defense segment.

Vicor Corporation (NASDAQ: VICR) today announced the expansion of its Picor series
cool power
® PI31xx Very High Density Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) based isolated DC/DC converters optimized for 24V industrial and utility applications.
28 V in the aerospace/defense segment and/or in demanding applications for a wide range of temperatures. The new Cool-Power PI31xx converters maintain the 0,87 x 0,65 x 0,265 inch (22,1 x 16,5 x 6,73 mm) surface mount package characteristic of this series to achieve a power density of up to 334 W/cubic inch and 2250 V input to output isolation. 50% smaller than conventional 1/16 brick isolated converters, these Cool-Power PI31xx converters offer exceptional performance in a package of CI for high-density system designs.

The Cool-Power PI31xx series converters use advanced Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) architecture and high-performance planar magnetic components to enable IC-like density and superior board routing flexibility. circuit board in environments with little available space. The high switching frequency (900 kHz) of the PI31xx series drives reduces input filter requirements and output capacitance, further reducing space constraints.

The PI31xx series is fully equipped with a wide variety of programmable functions, such as output voltage adjustment, programmable soft start capability and remote ENABLE on/off. It also has a temperature monitoring function that supplies an analog output voltage proportional to the internal temperature of the module.

The PI31xx series incorporates fault protection functions such as input overvoltage, undervoltage lockout, overtemperature, and output overvoltage protection. A constant current limiting threshold level is used to protect against short circuits and overloads. All fault conditions also incorporate an automatic reset function.

When combined with Picor QuietPower EMI filters® 0,98 x 0,49 x 0,18 inches (24,89 x 12,45 x 4,57 mm), the smallest filters within this product category, less than 25% of the size of their competitors, designers have an end-to-end isolated DC/DC conversion and EMI filtering solution that is unrivaled for density optimization. QuietPower filters achieve up to 99,5% efficiency and are designed for universal compatibility with high-frequency switching DC/DC converters from any manufacturer. Examples of products are the QuietPower QPI-12 filter with high common mode (>40dB) and differential mode (>70dB) attenuation for industrial applications. For aerospace/defense applications, the MQPI-18 offers >45dB and >75dB attenuation in common mode and differential mode, respectively.

"Used separately or together, Cool-Power PI31xx converters and QuietPower EMI filters challenge the power density limitations of conventional converters and filters," said Robert Gendron, vice president of Picor Semiconductor Power Solutions at Vicor. "Together they provide an elegant 'two-chip' solution that greatly facilitates the design of compact industrial, aerospace/defense and/or demanding applications over a wide temperature range."

Vicor will show its new Cool-Power PI31xx isolated DC/DC converters this week at PCIM 2013. Conference attendees can visit Vicor at Hall 9 Stand 155
