Microchip releases 4Kb SPD EEPROM for DDR4 SDRAM modules

Microchip announces a new 2Kb I4C™ SPD (Serial Presence Detect) EEPROM: 34AA04. This device is specially designed to work with the next generation of DDR4 (Double Data Rate 4) SDRAM modules used in high-speed PCs and laptops, as well as supporting older DDR2/3 platforms.

This new EEPROM is designed for the competitive consumer product market and is capable of operating with a wide voltage range from 1,7V to 3,6V. The 34AA04 is JEDEC JC42.4 (EE1004-v) Serial Presence Detect (SPD) compliant and is designed to be compatible with DDR4 SDRAM modules. The 34AA04 includes reversible software write protection for each of the four independent 128 x 8-bit blocks and accepts the new SMBus-compliant bus timeout. The device also features page write capability of up to 16 bytes of data and three address pins allow up to eight devices to be on the same bus.

The 34AA04 is compatible with existing DDR2 and DDR3 SPD EEPROMs. To ensure compatibility with such devices, the 34AA04's memory array is divided into two separate 256-byte banks that match the architecture of older SPD EEPROM devices. The 34AA04 addresses a wide variety of applications within the consumer electronics market, such as PCs, laptops, graphics cards, and other products.

Microchip has been supplying SPD EEPROM to the DRAM market on legacy DDR1, DDR2 and DDR3 platforms and reversible software write protection in four individual blocks, higher data rates and SMBus compatibility offer DRAM manufacturers DRAM greater flexibility for new functionality in the high-speed graphics card, laptop and PC markets.
