Three new high-performance miniature DC relays from Omron for the automotive industry

The three new PCB relays from Omron Electronic Components Europe are for automotive and mobility applications where space is limited and high performance is required.

Omron's new G8K, G8G and G8PM relays, indicated for the control of DC motors, occupy an area and volume up to 95% less than other similar relays on the market. All devices are smaller than standard DA relays and offer high contact pressure with maximum coil size along with 500VAC isolation capability. Each device meets the specific needs of different motor control applications in a tiny package that facilitates high-density mounting, thus reducing total PCB costs.

G8K series ultra-miniature short switching devices in applications such as automotive comfort electronics (e.g. seat controllers, door lock motors and sunroof motors) reduce volume and footprint by 95% compared to comparable devices. An optional “twin” version (two devices linked together) further increases mounting density. The G8K devices, which have the capacity to handle a current of 37A for short times and 5A continuously, together with a durability of 100.000 operations for the nominal load, can switch high powers despite their compact format thanks to the design of their contacts. and heat dissipation.

As a direct replacement for micro-ISO type relays, the G8G series relays are suitable for use in the engine compartment due to their high thermal resistance, while their small size facilitates high-density mounting and helps to reduce the size of the final products. G8G relays are also available in 24V, making them unique in this market as plug-in relay replacements. They are also 25% smaller than other alternatives and are suitable for commercial vehicle applications (eg seat heater, door lock, seat controls, defroster).

Last but not least, the G8PM series incorporates a patented contact structure that retains the current path for increased contact reliability. Designed as replacements for traditional mini ISO relays, but about half the size and capable of up to 1 million operations, these devices are suitable for very demanding automotive applications such as engine radiator fans, steering power assist, fuel pumps and starter motors. These PCB DC switching relays allow 14V/45ACC (resistive) switching with a high conduction current (40A) at a high ambient temperature of 125 C.

Yoshiaki Anai, Omron Technical Product Manager Application Engineering, said: “As direct replacements for micro ISO relays, these new devices support the automotive industry in its desire to design more compact printed circuit boards to reduce product size. final. But high-density mounting has to be accompanied by strong heat management. The G8PM in particular, with its patented low contact heating temperature, has a “twin contact” design that retains its reliability and low contact heating even if one of the contacts fails.”
