Microchip adds military ELDRS (Enhanced Low Dose Radiation Sensitivity) certification to its portfolio of small-signal bipolar junction transistors to ensure high reliability in critical applications

The DLA (Defense Logistics Agency) manages the global defense supply chain in the US and works with suppliers to ensure high reliability of all components incorporated into a final application. Within the manufacturing process of components designed for military applications, rigorous tests are carried out, to which is added compliance with the standards so that they are part of the QPL (Quality Products List), a list that guarantees a certain level of reliability and speeds up the supply process. Microchip Technology, a reference supplier in the aerospace and defense market, announces that its JAN transistor catalog has passed testing and meets military ELDRS (Enhanced Low Dose Radiation Sensitivity) requirements, including MIL-STD-750, Test Method 1019, and specifications such as MIL-PRF-19500/255, /291, /355, /376 and /391.

These military-grade transistors have been manufactured to withstand various levels of radiation exposure and are part of the JAN (Joint Army Navy) designation system, which is used to select components intended for military applications. These designations ensure that electronic components used in critical military and aerospace applications can operate reliably in intense radiation environments.

JAN Transistor Designations

  • JANSE transistors (30 Krad): resist up to 30 Krad per unit of absorbed radiation dose
  • JANSK transistors (50 Krad): resist higher levels of radiation, up to 50 Krad
  • JANSU transistors (100 Krad): the most resistant to radiation, up to 100 Krad

Microchip, which has 60 years of presence in the aerospace and defense market, has plants specialized in the manufacturing and testing of semiconductors for these sectors. The company's factory in Ennis, Ireland, is an advanced facility dedicated to testing and reliability in accordance with MIL-PRF-19500.

Microchip's Lawrence, Massachusetts, factory is DLA certified and has the capability to perform ELDRS testing in accordance with MIL-STD-750, Test Method 1019. Microchip provides the flexibility for customers to that perform testing according to the RHA (Radiation Hardness Assurance) level depending on the program needs for the components and the final application.
