Melexis introduces the MLX90382, an absolute magnetic encoder IC. Thanks to its compact size, stray field immunity, and support for on- and off-axis sensing, the MLX90382 offers seamless integration, even into micromotors. With 14-bit resolution, differential outputs, and a speed range up to 200.000 e-RPM, it is ideal for industrial automation, robotics, and mobility solutions.
As the use of robotic and automated solutions expands from high-end, specialized applications to more widespread applications, the demand for cost-effective and accurate encoders that provide essential motion feedback within these systems also increases. The need for high-speed encoder feedback is essential to ensure the proper operation and safety of electric motor-driven applications such as robotic arms, automated packaging machines, and industrial looms.
The MLX90382 is a magnetic position sensor IC that combines a Hall magnetic front end, an analog-to-digital converter, zero-latency on-chip digital signal processing, and multiple output drivers. The device utilizes the latest advancement of Melexis' Triaxis technology, bringing its expertise in magnetic positional sensing to high-speed encoder devices.
It can reach speeds of up to 200.000 rpm and has an immunity to stray fields of 360o up to 4 kA/m.
Helping to overcome typical mounting challenges associated with complex motor-driven applications, the MLX90382 offers the convenience of on- and off-axis mounting. This makes the IC compatible with hollow shaft applications, allowing wiring harnesses or other components to pass through the shaft without affecting encoder feedback, eliminating some design complexity and driving innovation.
The MLX90382 is available in a compact 24 x 4 mm4 QFN-2 package, supporting both 5 V and 3,3 V applications and complying with the RoHS directive. Reliability is assured thanks to the AEC-Q100 (Grade 0) qualification of both variants. In addition, the on-axis configuration meets safety standards with SIL2 integrations.
The MLX90382 offers five different output modes designed to serve a wide range of applications. They consist of an industry-standard differential ABI/UVW interface for incremental angular output, an emulation of UVW signals commonly used in BLDC motors, a PWM interface, as well as configurable SPI and SSI interfaces. Operating over a wide temperature range from -40°C to 150°C, this sensor is ideal for harsh environments.
“With the MLX90382, we have leveraged the value of Melexis’ Triaxis technology and applied it to magnetic rotary encoders,” says Atanas Dikov, Regional Marketing Manager at Melexis.
“This exciting addition to our range will help drive innovation across a wide variety of robotic and motorised applications, delivering precise and reliable operation for years to come.”
The MLX90382 is available now and is supported by a comprehensive evaluation kit to streamline the development process. Learn more at www.melexis.com/MLX90382
