Demonstration at Mobile World Congress 2022 of security specification test solutions for end-to-end integration of O-RAN systems

Keysight Technologies in collaboration with Pegatron Corporation and Auray Technology Corp. will demonstrate end-to-end (E2E) security features in open radio access networks (RAN) at the O-RAN Alliance Virtual Showcase during Mobile World Congress 2022 ( MWC22).

The virtual demo was recorded at Auray's O-RAN Testing and Integration Center (OTIC) & Security Laboratory, which provides testing, validation and integration services to the supply chain of O-RAN manufacturers. The O-RAN ALLIANCE requires manufacturers to perform Security Verification Specification (SCAS) verifications under 3GPP to obtain the E2E O-RAN Systems Integration Label. The demo at MWC22 leverages the Keysight Open Radio Architect (KORA) portfolio of solutions to validate the security capabilities of Pegatron's cloud-native O-RAN base station (gNodeB).

“We are pleased to work with Pegatron and Auray to demonstrate test solutions that enable a connected global ecosystem of O-RAN manufacturers, mobile operators, test labs and hyperscale data centers to create E2E performance verification environments based on data from the real world,” said Kalyan Sundhar, vice president and general manager of Keysight's 5G edge to core industry group. “Keysight's flexible O-RAN test solutions, with built-in test automation capabilities, support continuous integration, deployment, and test cycles, offering accelerated verification throughout the entire product workflow.”

The demo combines Keysight's integrated lab-based hardware and software emulation tools with automated 3GPP SCAS testing capabilities to demonstrate E2E O-RAN system security compliance, including:

  • User Equipment Emulation (UEE) test solution (UeSIM) that simulates real network traffic over radio and O-RAN fronthaul interfaces to validate base station performance across the entire protocol stack.
  • 4G/5G Core Emulator (CoreSIM) that simulates the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and 5G Core to verify O-RAN compliant 5G base station user and control planes.
  • Over-the-Air (OTA) wireless analyzer (WaveJudge) that captures and analyzes traffic on multiple interfaces simultaneously for in-depth debugging of individual items of O-RAN equipment.

“Pegatron offers a complete range of cloud-native network equipment solutions that are O-RAN compliant and integrate physical layer functionality with protocol layers 1 and 2. Keysight's open RAN solutions enable Pegatron to perform rigorous validation of interoperability, performance, security, and compliance under real-world conditions,” said CY Feng, general manager at Pegatron. “This ensures the successful introduction of Pegatron's gNodeB O-RANs to the market.”

Auray and Pegatron are part of a growing global connected ecosystem of O-RAN manufacturers, mobile operators, test labs, and hyperscale data centers that use KORA test tools to create data-driven, end-to-end performance verification environments. from real world. In 2021, the three companies also collaborated on the 3rd Global O-RAN Plugfest to verify performance and compliance of Pegatron Distributed O-RAN Units (O-DUs) and Central O-RAN Units (O-CUs) with O-RAN specifications under real-world conditions.

“Auray's OTIC and Security lab is one of the first labs to gain O-RAN ALLIANCE approval as a certified integration center,” said Daniel Chang, Chairman at Auray. “Keysight's solutions enable Auray to offer a full range of services for end-to-end integration verification of O-RAN equipment in a lab-based environment prior to deployment.”
