Linear Technology Corporation announces the LTC3121, a current-mode synchronous boost topology DC/DC converter with 3 MHz switching and built-in output disconnection. Its internal 1,5 A switches provide an output voltage of up to 15 V and an input voltage range from 1,8 V at startup (0,5 V running) to 5,5 V. This makes making the LTC3121 perfect for standard 3,3V and 5V batteries or power sources.
The LTC3121 supplies up to 400 mA continuous output current at 12 V from a 5 V input. Additionally, its 1,5 A current limit makes it ideal for applications where input current is limited, such as PCI Express, while reducing the size of the required external components. Burst Mode® (pulse burst mode) reduces quiescent current to as low as 25 µA, extending battery life in portable applications.
The combination of a thermally enhanced 3mm x 4mm DFN package along with a fixed 3MHz frequency allows the PCB designer to strike a balance between the solution and the required efficiency.
The LTC3121 has internal synchronous switches with an RDS(ON) as low as 121 mΩ (N-channel) and 188 mΩ (P-channel) to provide efficiencies up to 95%. Output disconnection allows full discharge of the output voltage at shutdown and eliminates large inrush currents at start-up, reducing pressure on the input source. The LTC3121 also regulates the output voltage when the input voltage exceeds the output voltage, making it compatible with any type of battery chemistry. For applications that require an absolute minimum of noise, the LTC3121 can be configured via an external pin to operate in continuous PWM mode.
Its additional features include synchronization with external clocks, output overvoltage protection, and robust output short-circuit protection. The LTC3121EDE is available from stock with a 12-pin 3mm x 4mm DFN package. The price in quantities of 1.000 units is $2,47 per unit.
