The future of the car in electronica 2014: Connectivity, lighting and autonomous driving

In the future, mobility will be greatly influenced by the evolution of automotive electronics. The latest fad includes energy efficiency, electric mobility, connectivity and autonomous driving. This year, some 1.500 exhibitors will demonstrate these and other topics at electronics 2014 from 11 to 14 November. Experts will also discuss the latest industry challenges and developments at the Automotive Forum and Automotive Electronics Conference.

Automotive electronics is one of the most important segments in the electronic components market. Cars already have on-board computers, as well as infotainment and assistance systems with an ever-increasing range of functions. Electric mobility, or the increased networking of cars and the development of autonomous driving, could mean additional potential for the industry. The German Trade and Economic Development Agency expects the world market volume for automotive electronics last year to be worth about $190 million. According to a forecast by the German Association of Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers “(ZVEI), the market volume is expected to increase to more than 430 million euros by the year 2025.

“The future of the automotive industry is electrification, automation and on the grid”, is also what Klaus Meder, President of the Automotive Electronics Division at Robert Bosch, says. Electronics play a key role in development. That is why the value of in-car hardware and software will continue to rise in the coming years. The extended Euro NCAP guidelines, which are used to assess the safety of vehicles, are driving the spread of assistance systems, such as advanced emergency braking systems. Customers and manufacturers alike are pouring their money into more and more in-car networking features. However, energy efficiency is also an important issue: “The new drive solutions will make it possible to further reduce CO2 emissions and conserve resources,” explains Meder.

Electric mobility in particular needs new products, especially power elements. To demonstrate how developments have progressed, Robert Bosch presents its latest solutions in the fields of semiconductors, sensors and electronic power modules.

Elektrobit Automotive is also betting on the “everything related” trend, which is why it has established its own “connected car” Division. In electronics, the company is participating in the Autosar joint exhibition: Among other things, the operating system Autosar EB OS tresos Security will be introduced, which is ISO 26262-compliant and is suitable for use in control units ASIL D (Automotive Safety Integrity Levels D).

“electronica is an important meeting for the electronics industry, and thanks to the automotive sector, it is also a very important event for us. The fair is an excellent opportunity to network and discover the trends and challenges that the industry is working on,” says Florian Wandling, Director of Automotive Innovation in the automotive segment at Elektrobit Automotive.
