New device keeps batteries and HVAC systems running quiet and cool

Allegro MicroSystems expands its QuietMotion™ product line with the introduction of the new electrical circuit Vehicle Qualified Door Supervisor A89307 Developed for battery cooling fans and HVAC systems in electric (EV) and hybrid cars, the A89307 delivers ultra-low noise and vibration through the use of a self-control algorithm. Field Oriented Control (FOC) to drive a continuous sinusoidal current to the load, helping vehicle manufacturers reduce noise and improve battery life, delivering more miles per charge and reducing the carbon footprint of the cars.

"By design, electric and hybrid cars are quieter than traditional models with internal combustion engines - especially when stationary - and drivers are increasingly sensitive to noise created by components such as cooling fans," says Steve Lutz, manager of Allegro's motor controller product line. “The A89307's hardware-based algorithm makes it easy for designers to reduce fan noise while improving cooling performance and increasing miles per charge. That is good for drivers and for the environment.”

Embedded motion control

Accelerate Sustainability Plans The A89307 includes a hardware-based algorithm, requiring no external sensors or software development; the user only needs to choose the factors through an easy user interface and load them into the EEPROM chip of the integrated circuit. With only 5 external components, the A89307 helps designers reduce material costs by reducing BOM components and facilitating very small system footprints for the motor PCBs. Its fully integrated algorithm can even eliminate the need for a separate microprocessor.

The operating modes

They include fully programmable open loop or closed loop PWM speed control. In perfect closed loop mode, the service customer can program the PWM-speed relationship to match the PWM commands provided by an external ECU. Field weakening is included to improve performance at high speed. Low speed operation and refrigeration start-up are just some of the features included in the A89307 hardware-based digital algorithm.

Although developed for electric car battery cooling fans, A89307 can also be used in HVAC fans such as fluid pumps in traction inverter cooling systems.
