Melexis' MLX92253 sets a new benchmark for accuracy, size and cost in DC motor applications

Melexis adds the MLX92253 to its Hall-effect Dual Latch product portfolio. This fast sensor offers two independent signal paths for minimal jitter, as well as a constant 90° phase shift regardless of the magnet pole pitch. This enables accurate speed and direction calculation in the ECU, as well as easy transfer across multiple platforms. This integrated solution is a cost-effective option for DC motors and encoders used in a wide range of embedded applications, such as automotive, alternative mobility, consumer and industrial.

In mobility applications, directional feedback combined with linear velocity, rotational speed or angular position sensing is critical for the basic operation and safety of countless systems. This information is used in passenger vehicles to control and limit the operation of motorised systems such as window lifts, seat motors and motorised tailgates. In e-bikes, it is used to detect cadence and activate electric pedal assist. Motor feedback also plays a crucial role in ensuring safe and precise movement, both in industry and in our homes, in applications such as smart blinds and ventilation systems.

Currently, engineers using a dual-latching solution for stepper or DC motor applications rely on either integrating two discrete solutions or a pitch-dependent solution. In both cases, designs are hampered by increased development, complicated and highly specific magnet designs, and increased costs. The MLX92253 is distinguished by featuring two Hall plates, one on the Z-axis and one on the X-axis, with two independent signal paths. It also features a common magnetic center, ensuring a constant 90° phase shift (quadrature) between the two speed outputs, regardless of the magnet pole pitch. Additionally, the MLX92253 features a low and narrow magnetic threshold, allowing the use of smaller, more affordable magnets or a larger air gap for easier mounting. This functionality gives engineers greater flexibility in their magnetic design and allows the design to be more easily reused across multiple products.

In operation, the MLX92253 offers fast, accurate feedback with low delay, low jitter, and higher reliability than traditional solutions. It features a 500 kHz cut-off frequency, an operating voltage range from 2,7 V to 5,5 V to suit low-power embedded designs, a wide operating temperature range from -40 ̊C to 150 ̊C, and output state feedback during power-up. The power-up feedback feature can be used to convert both outputs to inputs during power-up. This allows a microcontroller to recover the MLX92253’s previous state before power-down, ensuring that no motion is lost.

“The MLX92253 sets a new standard for affordable DC motors and encoders,” said Minko Daskalov, Product Line Manager at Melexis. “It reduces development, production and material costs while supporting a wide range of applications that contribute to global sustainability.”

The MLX92253 is now available in a compact TSOT23 package. It is also available upon request as engineering samples in a VA package. Discover more solutions by visiting www.melexis.com/MLX92253 or contact us directly through www.melexis.com/contact
