The MLX81117 is the next member of the Melexis lighting IC family to support the MeLiBu high-speed communication interface, allowing vehicle manufacturers to offer enhanced features in new models.
Tessenderlo, Belgium, March 25, 2021 – Melexis, a global microelectronic engineering company, has introduced the MLX81117, its latest multi-channel RGB LED monitor. This new product supports the MeLiBu™ high-speed communication license-free IP, which enables intelligent animated lighting developments for cars.
This technology is already being harnessed by the world's leading vehicle manufacturers to enhance the safety features of their latest models. The MLX81117 extends the MeLiBu family of products with even higher color mixing accuracy, with a delta UV of <0,01.
Automakers continue to embrace animated cabin lighting to provide important information such as driver assistance prompts, vehicle status updates, or advanced comfort features such as adaptive dome lighting. RGB LED light bars are increasingly being used to communicate with the driver through sequences of colours, which change and flash. However, this presents engineering challenges, such as maintaining a consistent color across all lightbar LEDs and also implementing simultaneous light changes.
The MLX81117 addresses this issue by integrating the Melexis MeLiBu high-speed IP communication interface. MeLiBu controls individual LEDs to incorporate lighting effects defined by vehicle systems. The intelligent RGB LED supervisor also provides real-time compensation for any color drift caused by environmental changes, and color mixing accuracy with a delta UV of <0,01 percent to suppress any noticeable differences between LEDs. .
The MeLiBu communication interface uses a CAN-FD physical layer to offer robust and reliable performance at speeds of up to two Mbit. MeLiBu also offers intelligent, high-resolution operation to smooth temperature-related color drift to sustain a consistent, distraction-free user experience under all operating conditions.
Additional features of the MLX81117 LED Supervisor IC include brightness control over a wide dimming range, allowing daylight levels to be adjusted. The MLX81117 meets the functional safety requirements of ISO 26262 up to Safety Integrity Level B (ASIL B) and the design also offers low EMI and high levels of immunity, helping designers meet safety standards.
