Introduced a comprehensive portfolio of IGBT 7 power devices optimized for sustainability, electromobility and data center applications

Microchip's IGBT 7 range features different topologies and current and voltage ranges

Power components are evolving to meet the increasingly demanding requirements for higher efficiency, smaller size and superior performance in power electronic systems. Microchip Technology today announces its IGBT Device Catalog 7, offered in different packages, topologies and current and voltage ranges, so that system designers have a wide choice of power solutions.

This new portfolio, characterized by higher power and lower power losses in small devices, is designed for high-growth market segments such as sustainability, electromobility and data centers. These high-performance IGBT 7 devices are key elements in power applications such as solar inverters, hydrogen ecosystems, commercial and agricultural vehicles, and More Electric Aircraft (MEA).

Designers can select a suitable power solution based on their requirements. IGBT 7 devices are supplied in standard 3 mm D4 and D62 packages as well as SP6C, SP1F and SP6LI packages. Many configurations are available in the following topologies: three-level NPC (Neutral-Point Clamped), three-phase bridge, step-up chopper, step-down chopper, common mode source, full bridge, phase branch, single switch and T-type. The devices feature voltage ranges from 1200V to 1700V and current ratings from 50A to 900A.

“The versatile IGBT 7 portfolio provides ease of use and cost efficiency along with higher levels of power density and reliability, offering maximum flexibility to our customers. These products are designed for general industrial applications as well as aerospace and defense applications,” said Leon Gross, corporate vice president of Microchip’s Discrete Products Group.

“In addition, our power solutions can be integrated with the wide range of FPGAs, microcontrollers, microprocessors, DSC (Digital Signal Controllers) dsPiC® and analog devices from Microchip to provide a comprehensive solution from a single supplier.”

The IGBT’s lower on-off voltage (Vce), anti-parallel diode improvements (lower Vf), and higher current capability can enable lower power losses, increased power density, and increased system efficiency. Lower inductance packages, coupled with increased overload capability with a Tvj of −175°C, make these devices excellent choices for creating rugged, high-reliability aviation and defense applications such as propulsion, drive, and power distribution, at lower system cost.

For motor control applications where improved dv/dt controllability is important, IGBT 7 devices are designed to provide freewheeling smoothness for efficient, smooth, and optimized switch control. These high-performance devices are also intended to improve system reliability, reduce EMI, and minimize voltage spikes.

Microchip offers a broad portfolio of power management solutions consisting of analog devices, silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC)-based power technologies, dsPIC® Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs), and standard, modified, and custom power modules.
