Next-generation e-MMC devices provide improved write amplification and performance stability

KIOXIA Europe GmbH today announced that it has begun offering samples of next-generation JEDEC e-MMC compliant embedded Flash memory products for consumer applications. The new products are available in 64 and 128 gigabyte (GB) capacities and integrate the company's BiCS FLASH 3D memory and a controller in a single package.

Demand for midrange capabilities in consumer products such as tablets and IoT devices continues to grow. Although the market is gradually shifting to UFS, there are still cases where e-MMC will continue to be relevant. KIOXIA's new e-MMC devices expand these available options.

KIOXIA, a leading provider of Flash memory and storage for consumer applications and mobile devices, has been supporting e-MMC since 2007 and was the first vendor to introduce the highest performance solution after e-MMC, UFS.[3], in early 2013. Today, KIOXIA's extensive line of both e-MMC and UFS solutions support a wide range of densities (4GB-1TB).

This new generation of e-MMC based on BiCS FLASH offers the following features, ideal for consumer applications:

  • A new generation of BiCS FLASH 3D memory[4]
  • An improved architecture to reduce internal write amplification and more stable sequential write performance
  • Pre-programmed user data that will now have greater reliability[5] before being sent for review during the customer's manufacturing process
  • Idle time to automatic sleep is reduced by 100 times[6] over current generation to help extend battery life for user applications
  • Increased performance is achieved when accessing multiple arrays within the device
  • Supports JEDEC eMMC 5.1 standard with higher interface speed (HS400)

“KIOXIA addresses the ever-evolving consumer applications that require next-generation, enhanced e-MMCs by introducing JEDEC e-MMC Ver. 5.1 devices and delivering a broader, higher-performance product line. In doing so, KIOXIA is leading the way forward," said Axel Stoermann, Vice President Marketing and Memory Engineering, KIOXIA Europe GmbH.

KIOXIA is already offering samples of its new generation e-MMC devices and they are expected to be available in October.
