KIOXIA CM5.0 Series PCIe 9 NVMe SSD Raises the Bar with CBA Chip Architecture
KIOXIA Europe GmbH today announced the development and prototype demonstration of its new KIOXIA CM5.0 Series PCIe 9 NVMe SSDs. These next-generation drives are the first enterprise SSDs built with 3GB BiCS FLASH™ TLC-based 8D flash memory.ª KIOXIA's next-generation flash memory, featuring CMOS directly bonded to array (CBA) technology, an architectural innovation that delivers significant advances in energy efficiency, performance, density, and sustainability, while doubling the available capacity per flash device.
As the demands of modern computing continue to grow, applications such as AI, machine learning, and high-performance computing require sophisticated solid-state storage infrastructure, requiring not only enterprise-class performance but also increased energy efficiency to ensure scalability and affordable operating costs. Meeting these demands is central to the design of the KIOXIA CM9 series, which is specifically engineered to support next-generation data center workloads.
The 8-bit BiCS FLASH™ª KIOXIA's next-generation 3D flash memory, the company's most advanced 9D flash memory to date, is a key element of the CMXNUMX series. This technology uses a CBA-based architecture that significantly increases NAND interface speed, improves density and power efficiency, and reduces latency, which directly translates to improved SSD performance.
KIOXIA CM9 Sseries SSDs deliver performance improvements of up to approximately 65% in random writes, 55% in random reads, and 95% in sequential writes compared to the previous generation, the KIOXIA CM7 series. Additionally, performance gains per watt include approximately 55% higher sequential read efficiency and 75% higher sequential write efficiency.
Axel Stoermann, Vice President and CTO of Embedded Memory and SSD Products at KIOXIA Europe GmbH, emphasizes: “Along with processing power and energy efficiency, memory is critical to enabling AI, machine learning, and high-performance computing applications. The CM9 series, featuring our 8-bit BiCS FLASH™ª generation, is designed to address these storage demands by providing top-level bit density, fast data transfer, and exceptional power efficiency, all of which contribute to the superior performance of our SSDs.
Highlights of the KIOXIA CM9 Series SSD include (preliminary and subject to change):
- Compliant with PCI 5.0, NVMe 2.0, NVMe-MI 1.2c and OCP Datacenter NVMe SSD 2.5 specifications
- Dual port support on 2,5-inch and E3.S form factors.
- Intensive reading (1 DWPD) and mixed-use (3 DWPD) resistors
- Sequential performance (128 kibibytes (KiB)/QD32): 14,8 GB/s read and 11 GB/s write
- Random throughput (4 KiB): 3400 KIOPS (QD512) and 800 KIOPS (QD32)
- 2,5-inch capacities up to 61,44 terabytes (TB) and E3.S capacities up to 30,72 TB
KIOXIA CM9 series SSD samples are now available to select customers and will be on display at Dell Technologies World, taking place May 19-22 in Las Vegas.
