KIOXIA announces next-generation E1S SSDs for AI and hyperscale environments

KIOXIA's new NX1 series NVMe SSDs for data centers boost performance and support direct liquid cooling

KIOXIA Europe GmbH today announced the KIOXIA NX1 series of solid-state drives (SSDs), a new generation of E1.S PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs for data centers, and KIOXIA's first SSD that supports direct liquid cooling.

The KIOXIA NX1 series incorporates KIOXIA's next-generation, in-house developed controller architecture, delivering impressive capabilities while laying the foundation for future features. These new drives are designed to provide high-performance, low-power storage for GPU-equipped servers and hyperscale data center environments.

The KIOXIA NX1 series is the successor to the XD series and leverages PCIe 5.0 performance to help cloud service providers and hyperscale operators optimize their infrastructure while maintaining operational efficiency. Compared to the previous generation(1)KIOXIA's NX1 SSDs offer 38% higher sequential write performance and 20% higher random write performance.(2).

As AI infrastructures continue to grow, storage must keep pace with increasingly dense server designs packed with accelerators. The E1.S form factor helps maximize storage while supporting advanced thermal management, including direct liquid cooling configurations with compatible cooling plates, enabling efficient heat dissipation in high-performance AI server environments.

"The KIOXIA NX1 series is designed to facilitate this transition thanks to its direct liquid cooling capabilities and its high-level performance and low power consumption," concluded Paul Rowan, marketing director and vice president of KIOXIA Europe GmbH.

Among other features, the following are included:

  • Available in 9,5mm E1.S (compatible with direct liquid cooling and air cooling) and 15mm E1.S (compatible with air cooling) formats.
  • 1 DWPD (drive writes per day) for read-intensive applications; capacity range from 1,92 TB to 15,36 TB(3).
  • It complies with PCIe 5.0, NVMe 2.0 and Open Compute Project (OCP) Datacenter NVMe SSD 2.6 specifications, and is compatible with NVMe Flexible Data Placement (FDP).
  • With KIOXIA BiCS FLASH TLC memory technologyTM 8th generation, which operates with the CMOS architecture directly bonded to the die (CBA).
  • Optional Security Drive Model with Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) compatible with TCG Opal[4]

Currently, KIOXIA's NX1 series is being sampled with select hyperscale customers. The new drives will be unveiled at FMS: The Future of Memory and Storage, taking place August 4-6 in Santa Clara, California.
