Infineon Technologies AG introduces the ISSI20BxxF family of solid-state isolators (SSI), bringing solid-state isolation technology to high-volume applications traditionally served by photovoltaic isolators (PVIs), photovoltaic relays (PVRs), and electromechanical relays (EMRs). Housed in a compact 150-mil PG-DSO-8 package, comparable in size to existing PVI solutions, this new family offers designers a direct upgrade path to SSI technology in space-constrained designs, while benefiting from increased drive capacity, integrated protection functions, and flexibility in power breaker selection. Target applications include solid-state relay modules, PLC input/output, industrial automation, laboratory DC power supplies, automated test equipment, low-voltage building automation, and telecommunications infrastructure.
The ISSI20BxxF family is based on Infineon's patented coreless transformer technology, which transfers both signal and power across the insulation barrier to drive external power circuit breakers without requiring a dedicated isolated gate power supply. This approach provides higher output drive capacity than conventional PVI-based solutions, enabling compatibility with a wide range of external power circuit breakers. Integrated protection features include overcurrent protection, overtemperature protection, fast fault disconnect, and interlocking capability, reducing the need for external protection circuitry and improving system robustness. Select variants also support the Miller dynamic clamping function and fast start-up function for applications with more demanding switching requirements.
The family comprises three devices: ISSI20B02F, ISSI20B03F, and ISSI20B11F, all housed in the 150-mil PG-DSO-8 package. All three devices provide 3 kVrms isolation, a 4 mm creepage distance, and UL 1577 certification, covering applications where basic isolation is appropriate according to applicable safety standards. The ISSI20BxxF family complements Infineon's previously introduced ISSI20RxxH and ISSI30RxxH families, expanding the solid-state relay (SSI) portfolio to designs requiring a more compact size.
Compared to electromechanical relays, SSI-based solid-state relays eliminate mechanical wear, contact bounce, and electrical arcing, enabling quiet operation and a long service life—features increasingly valued in high-cycle applications.
