We express our longstanding goal with a new name: Keysight Technologies

By now, you may be aware that Agilent Technologies' Electronic Measurement Division is becoming a separate company. On January 7, 2014 we announced the name of this new company: Keysight Technologies.

Between now and November 2014, when we will be operating independently, there will be big changes going on behind the scenes, although some changes will be fully public. But it is as the French saying goes Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose, that is, the more changes are made, the more it seems that everything is left the same. Although the spin-off and the new name will result in positive and important changes for us as a company, customers will hardly notice it.

The meaning of the new name

I'm sure you're aware that coming up with a new name can be a really arduous process. Although the road has not been without its obstacles, we have kept trying until we have come up with a name that perfectly reflects the value we strive to offer our customers.

The hidden meaning in Keysight comes from two English words: “key” and “insight.” When "key" is used alone, it has two important meanings: indispensable or essential, and means of access. For its part, “insight” is the ability to see and, at the same time, have vision and perception. When combined into Keysight, this coined term denotes the ability to deliver essential insights that enable our clients to understand and decipher the changing technology landscape they face.

Our corporate signature includes two other elements that round off our idea: the slogan and the logo. As you can see in the image, our motto says “Unlocking measurement insights for 75 years”. The first part reinforces the meaning of the name that we have described above.

The second part refers to our rich heritage, dating back to 1939, when Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard created the test equipment company Hewlett-Packard, which became Agilent in 1999 and will be renamed Keysight in 2014. The red logo next to Keysight is a stylized waveform that represents our expertise in electronic measurements.

Together these elements pay homage to our heritage and represent our ongoing commitment to customers.

The name, logo, tagline and typeface have also been designed to capture the spirit of a company that will be innovative, insightful and forward thinking.

Emphasis on what we will keep and incorporation of two key differences

As we've discussed before, once we start operating as Keysight, there will be a lot that won't change at all. First, we will continue to be the leading technology company for electronic measurements.

We will also continue to be number 1 in three main market segments: communications (namely, the mobile data ecosystem); aerospace and defense; and industry, semiconductors and computing.

Our product catalogs and roadmaps will remain the same, and we will preserve our magnificent heritage of intellectual property, patents and proprietary ASIC designs.

Along the same lines, our measurement research labs, which spun off from Agilent's labs in 2010, will continue to explore the limits of testing. Finally, we will maintain the same global presence, with the largest sales and support team of any test and measurement provider.

We will make two important changes, both very positive. First of all, the whole company will dedicate 100% of its efforts to electronic measures and the success of our customers. Second, this well-defined goal will ensure that top electronic metering opportunities also become top business priorities.

Reaffirmation of our commitment to customers

It goes without saying that our success depends on the success of our customers, and their success depends, in turn, on their ability to trust that they will find new solutions.

To get Keysight customers to open those doors, we are dedicating all our energy and experience to the future of measurement and testing. Our idea is simple: we want to help Keysight end users identify the right idea at the right time, and from there, help them create a new generation of technologies.

It's important to remember that we are a company that has its roots in innovations that date back to the days when Hewlett and Packard worked out of the garage on Addison Street in Palo Alto, California.

Our innovations began with US Patent No. 2.268.872 for a "Variable Frequency Oscillation Generator." It should be remembered that Bill Hewlett's design was based on a light bulb, the quintessential symbol of new ideas.

In this case, the bulb was acting as a temperature dependent resistor in the feedback loop of a Wien bridge oscillator. It was the first of countless ideas, all of them elegant, efficient and innovative, to have sprung from the minds of our R&D engineers.

With a view to the future

We believe we are experiencing a new passing of the baton: first from HP to Agilent, and now from Agilent to Keysight. Building on our 75-year history, we aim to bring about a new generation of inventions and “Eureka!” moments. The people who will make up Keysight are excited by the opportunity to pursue our passion for electronic measurement. And we achieve the greatest satisfaction when this passion is translated into new inventions, new discoveries and new breakthroughs for our customers. We look forward to continuing to help you decipher information about measurement.
