Microchip's 5071B is a compact commercial timing product that is easily installable in a variety of industries.
From common applications such as mobile phones and banking to complex underwater defense missions, the need for accurate synchronized timing and frequency solutions is paramount to protect and process data. Many of these applications rely on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) for accurate time and frequency scales, but GNSS systems are susceptible to interference and attacks that aim to manipulate the data. With the goal of providing industries such as telecommunications, data centers, metrology, aviation and defense with a long-term accurate frequency and timing solution, Microchip Technology today announces the cesium atomic clock 5071B, capable of maintaining its precision autonomously for months in the event that the GNSS signal fails.
Microchip's 5071B is the next-generation commercial cesium clock successor to the 5071A, which has been a major contributor to international time for more than three decades. Supplied in a 5071U high 3-inch rack mounted enclosure, the 19B is a compact product intended for environments where it can be easily transported and protected than the alternative model specially designed for laboratory environments.
The 5071B incorporates advanced electronics to address potential obsolescence and make circuitry RoHS compliant. The product offers 100 ns accuracy for more than two months and maintains system synchronization when signals from a GNSS system such as GPS are not available. For example, this capability would allow a 5G network to be fully operational for months without GNSS.
“The 5071A has been the world's leading time and frequency standard for decades. With the new 5071B, Microchip continues to be the market leader in complex timing solutions,” said Randy Brudzinski, vice president of Microchip's Time and Frequency Systems business unit. "Our customers can rely on the 5071B technology for years to come and implement a timing and frequency solution with confidence in continuity of supply and modern components that end obsolescence concerns."
As a cesium beam product with no long-term deterministic frequency drift, the 5071B provides an absolute frequency accuracy of 5E-13 or 500 billionths under all specified environmental conditions over the life of the product. .
For military applications that require rapid installation of radar systems, the stability of the 5E-13 eliminates the need to purchase external timing sources prior to signal output. In satellite communications, this allows the user to broadcast and broadcast in very small frequency bands without going out of band throughout the lifetime of the product.
When installed, a product like the 5071B can better maintain and synchronize critical communication between an aircraft and the control tower. Air traffic control in the US uses ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) and WAM (Wide Area Multilateration) to accurately locate an aircraft's position in the country's airspace. The stability of the 5071B provides more accurate locations and continues to function if GNSS is out of service.
The 5071B is now fully compliant with the Restriction of Use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive,
Its state-of-the-art solutions are based on the company's long experience in the field of synchronization and timing, as well as the vertical integration of its main timing technologies.
