The new series reduces the assembly area by approximately 64%, facilitating the development of high-performance smartphones and wearable devices.
Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has begun mass production of the LLD series, the world's smallest three-terminal, low equivalent series inductance (ESL) multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). Measuring just 0201 inches (0,6 × 0,3 mm), the new products reduce the mounting area by approximately 64% compared to Murata's previous smallest size of 0402 inches (1,0 × 0,5 mm), freeing up valuable printed circuit board (PCB) space in compact devices such as smartphones and wearables.
As smartphones and wearable devices incorporate increasingly powerful integrated circuits (ICs), maintaining a stable power supply becomes more complex. High-speed operation causes rapid changes in current demand, which can lead to fluctuations in the voltage supplied to the IC. Minimizing this instability is essential for ensuring reliable performance. Thanks to their four shorter current paths, three-terminal capacitors offer a lower ESL than conventional two-terminal components, helping to maintain a stable power supply to the IC.
At the same time, increasingly thin and compact electronic devices require efficient use of the limited space available on the PCB. However, miniaturizing three-terminal capacitors has proven difficult because the structures of their internal and external electrodes are more complex than those of conventional two-terminal types.
Murata has overcome this challenge by optimizing the electrode design and refining its manufacturing processes. The resulting 0201-inch products allow for high-density assembly while stabilizing the supply voltage near the ICs, even at high frequencies. This gives designers greater flexibility in component placement and circuit design around the ICs, leading to improved performance in space-constrained electronic devices.
Two models are available. The LLD033R60G105ME01 has a capacitance of 1 µF, a nominal voltage of 4 VDC, and an operating temperature range of -55 to +85 °C. The LLD033D80E105ME01 has a capacitance of 1 µF, a nominal voltage of 2,5 VDC, and an operating temperature range of -55 to +105 °C.
Murata will continue to develop compact, high-performance MLCCs for mobile and wearable devices, contributing to further miniaturization and improved performance of electronic equipment.
