Microchip expands its SPE range with new 10BASE-T1S devices that offer scalable connectivity at the edge

The new transceivers and a family of integrated endpoints simplify zonal architectures and reduce system complexity for automotive and industrial applications.

Microchip Technology today announced the expansion of its 10BASE-T1S range With the introduction of the LAN8679 and LAN8680 10BASE-T1S PMD transceivers, as well as the LAN8660X/1X/2X family of endpoints with integrated transceivers, these solutions, designed for next-generation zone architectures, provide flexible and compact connectivity that brings Ethernet to the network edge.

As automotive, industrial, and robotic systems evolve into fully Ethernet-based networks, designers face increasing demand for simplified architectures that reduce cabling complexity and enable more efficient integration of edge nodes. Microchip's new 10BASE-T1S devices address these challenges, as they are designed to meet AEC-Q100 and ISO 26262 functional safety standards through the VelocityDRIVE range.™ Microchip, along with other multidrop connectivity solutions that incorporate a standardized and optimized interface.

The LAN8679 transceiver offers a standardized Open Alliance 3-pin (OA3P) interface in a small, 8-pin VDFN package. This transceiver is suitable for edge-mounted nodes in space-constrained environments and reduces pin count and design complexity. The LAN8680 achieves similar performance by integrating System Basis Chip (SBC) functions such as power management, system wake/sleep control, and monitoring. Both devices are designed to enhance reliability and safety in demanding environments such as automotive and industrial applications.

“Microchip’s new 10BASE-T1S product line is a step forward in our commitment to enabling scalable, all-Ethernet network architectures,” said Charlie Forni, corporate vice president of Microchip’s Networking and Connectivity business unit. “With the simplicity of the OA3P interface and the functionality of the integrated endpoint, these devices give designers the flexibility to develop efficient and reliable systems while significantly reducing complexity at the edge.”

Complementing these devices, the LAN8660X/1X/2X endpoint family integrates a PMD transceiver into a single-chip Remote Control Protocol (RCP) solution. This approach allows designers to deploy compact, fully integrated nodes at the edge for applications such as control, lighting, and audio systems without the need for external physical components.

Thanks to the 10BASE-T1S multidrop topology, Microchip solutions allow multiple nodes, typically eight or more, to share a single bus line. This reduces cabling weight, lowers system costs, and eliminates the need for gateways, thus facilitating the direct connection of sensors and actuators at the network edge.

Microchip's expanded Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) portfolio is designed for a wide range of applications, including zoned architectures in automotive, industrial automation, robotics, and aerospace and defense systems. These products align with industry trends toward consolidated networks and simplified connectivity environments, enabling designers to implement efficient and scalable architectures built entirely on Ethernet.
