Melexis introduces the MLX90412-D, a 2,2A single-coil cooling fan controller offering plug-and-drive simplicity for seamless integration. Expanding the MLX90412 family, it delivers enhanced configurability and smoother motor control for higher-wattage fans. It is optimized for demanding applications, including data center power systems, AI workstation GPUs, UPS systems, industrial drives, and household appliances.
The increasing power density in modern electronics systems places new demands on cooling performance. From industrial power supplies and data center infrastructure to AI workstations, designers must manage higher thermal loads while maintaining reliability, efficiency, and a compact system design. In these environments, larger, more powerful fans must protect more complex electronic components, while manufacturers continue to face stringent constraints regarding system cost, design effort, acoustic performance, and lifespan. The MLX90412-D addresses this need with a carefully balanced approach, offering advanced motor control features and proven Melexis reliability in a compact, code-free solution.
To simplify system design, the MLX90412-D offers code-free "plug and drive" integration for higher-power single-coil fan applications. It provides an all-in-one alternative to discrete MCU-based implementations, reducing software development effort and the number of external components, while also making it easier for customers to replace existing solutions. It allows configuration of key parameters such as speed curves, FG (frequency generator) signal options, and motor control behavior, enabling designers to fine-tune fan performance without the need for firmware development. Compared to three-phase approaches in applications where single-coil performance is sufficient, the MLX90412-D also offers a more cost-effective path to robust fan control.
With a current limit of 2,2 A, the MLX90412-D supports higher-power fan designs, including applications up to approximately 18 W at 12 V and 36 W at 24 V. This makes it ideal for industrial power supplies, data center power supply systems and UPSs, industrial drives, appliance electronics cooling, and higher-power VGA/GPU cooling for AI workstations, where a single, larger blower fan may be preferable to multiple smaller fans. A range of protection and diagnostic features, such as programmable locked rotor protection (LRP), temperature shutdown (TSD), programmable overvoltage protection (OVP), and overcurrent protection (OCP), further ensure safe operation.
The MLX90412-D also incorporates an improved motor control algorithm that provides smoother start/stop behavior, reduced noise, and extended service life. The revised proportional-integral (PI) regulation enables stable operation even at very low speeds, while multiple start/stop profiles help designers adapt to diverse application needs.
“The MLX90412-D offers engineers a simpler way to design higher-power, single-coil cooling fans without compromising quality or configurability,” said Xuanhong Ou, marketing director at Melexis. “Its no-code configuration, flexible speed control, and proven Melexis reliability help customers reduce design effort while meeting the cooling needs of industrial power systems and AI workstation applications.”
The MLX90412-D comes in a DFN10 package (3 x 3 mm²). Samples are available now. Learn more at melexis.com/MLX90412.
