Moxa's next-generation Arm computers receive IEC 62443-4-2 SL2 certification to enhance edge security

Moxa UC Series IEC 62443

Moxa Inc. has announced that it has achieved IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2 (SL2) certification, under the Certification Body Scheme (CB Scheme) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), for its UC Series computers with 64-bit Arm architecture running Moxa Industrial Linux 4 (MIL4) Secure OS. This milestone represents a significant advancement, moving from a single certified product to establishing a uniform security foundation across its entire product range. This allows customers to benefit from a verified security architecture in both data gateways and 5G-enabled edge computing platforms.

Moxa successfully launched its first product in 2023. host device certified according to IEC 62443-4-2 in the world, the Arm UC-8200 series of computers. Building on this achievement, The entire range of 64-bit Arm computers in the UC series now has this certification, offering customers a reliable operational technology (OT) computing platform, built on a solid and secure foundation.

From voluntary good practice to essential requirement

Currently, several cybersecurity regulations are coming into effect simultaneously in different regions. The European Union's Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) is scheduled for full implementation by the end of 2027, while Japan launched its JC-STAR IoT security labeling scheme in 2025. Although these regulations differ in their names and geographic scope, they all share a core technical framework closely based on IEC 62443 standards.

In today's market, customers face increasing scrutiny, not only regarding the machines or systems they purchase, but also concerning the cybersecurity maturity level of the entire supply chain. A computer certified to IEC 62443-4-2, for example, helps equipment manufacturers and systems integrators demonstrate that cybersecurity is built into the platform from its initial design. This reduces project risk, accelerates certification processes, increases customer confidence, and improves readiness to meet regulatory requirements and the needs of critical infrastructure. The certification was carried out by DEKRA, the world's largest independent, privately held organization specializing in testing, inspection, and certification, under the IECEE CB scheme.

“The IEC 62443-4-2 standard provides a clear and internationally recognized framework for verifying the cybersecurity capabilities of components in industrial automation and control systems,” said Maxi Tsai, General Manager of DEKRA APAC DTS and Onward Security. “Moxa’s UC Series 64-bit Arm computers have achieved IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2 certification, demonstrating that they have been assessed against clearly defined international cybersecurity requirements. We are proud to have supported Moxa in this process and will continue to help industrial equipment manufacturers strengthen the cyber resilience of their products and build market confidence through our certification services.”

The IEC 62443-4-2 certification demonstrates a Secure by Design approach in product development

As factories and oil and gas and energy facilities evolve toward increasingly software-defined and interconnected environments, operators need a secure foundation for deploying applications, virtualizing workloads, and leveraging edge intelligence. With the IEC 62443-4-2 SL2 certified UC Series and integrated with MIL Secure OS, customers can choose a PC without compliance risks. These PCs incorporate industrial-grade cybersecurity features developed using a Secure by Design approach, along with hardening guides and diagnostic tools. Furthermore, a 10-year security maintenance commitment ensures long-term protection and reduces lifecycle risks, helping operators streamline ongoing operations and minimize unexpected security-related costs.

“With a computer certified to IEC 62443-4-2 SL2, our customers can start their projects on a pre-validated cybersecurity foundation, allowing engineering teams to focus on application deployment and operational resilience,” said Casper Yang, Vice President of Moxa’s Product Business Group. “Our standardized Secure by Design platform provides a consistent security foundation backed by 10 years of operating system support for both compact gateways and high-performance 5G edge platforms. With our certified UC Series portfolio, customers no longer have to choose between regulatory compliance and having the specifications they need. We help them reduce the effort spent on security design, validation, and compliance, so they can focus their resources on accelerating solution development and time to market.”

The UC series computers, certified to IEC 62443-4-2 SL2, offer a Secure by Design foundation with MIL Secure OS. They also incorporate hardware authentication via Root of Trust and Secure Boot to prevent system tampering and cyberattacks, as well as self-healing and dual-system features to maximize availability, along with network protection mechanisms that reduce the attack surface.
