STERIS Selects Saft Lithium-Ion Batteries to Power its Gmax™ Intelligent Operating Table

Saft's rechargeable lithium-ion batteries provide stand-alone power for a full 8-hour shift to the STERIS Gmax™ operating table

Saft has developed specialized lithium-ion battery packs to power the new generation of Gmax™ operating tables created by STERIS, a leading global provider of innovative healthcare and life sciences products and services. Saft has a strong reputation in the healthcare industry, having delivered high performance battery solutions for mobile workstations, wearable devices, ventilators, ventilators, defibrillators and other critical medical devices. This latest project with STERIS allows Saft to be in the heart of the operating room.

STERIS has created the Gmax™ concept to meet the growing demand from hospitals for operating tables and offers a breakthrough in ergonomics to maximize operating room safety and contribute to a faster and healthier patient recovery. The Gmax™ design provides a fully motorized system that reduces physical stress on the clinical team as the patient is positioned on the surface of the operating table upon arrival in the operating room and remains there until transferred to the recovery room. . Thanks to the handheld bluetooth control, the medical team can adjust each movement of the table to best position the patient depending on each surgical specialty.

“We saw the selection of battery packs as a critical factor in the success of the Gmax™ design as they have to ensure us fully reliable, self-contained power for the typical eight-hour shift before recharging,” said Lionel Deltenre, Product Manager Gmax™ in the Steris Marketing Department. "Saft's integrated MP batteries have proven to be the ideal choice thanks to their high quality, compact construction and certified safety offering the essential combination of performance, reliability and long life."

The Saft and STERIS engineering teams have worked closely together to develop the integration of two MP battery packs to power the operating table. These prismatic cells were selected for their compact form factor, which allowed a battery pack to be designed to fit on the table column providing exceptional power and energy performance. In fact, head-to-head testing during prototype development demonstrated that the Saft cells significantly outperformed other competing cells in terms of energy storage capacity. Saft battery packs are equipped with an intelligent battery management system that offers redundant safety protection against abusive conditions, cell balancing, state of charge and health monitoring, and SMBus communication.A The key factor in favor of batteries Saft's PM integration was its range of safety certifications, including UN, UL and IEC 62133 standards. Saft has taken the approval of its quality procedures to a higher level after achieving the ISO 13485 certification that covers the development, production and quality control processes for medical devices and their components.

“Saft is delighted to have worked with STERIS on this exciting new concept in OR technology. The key to this successful process is not only our advanced lithium-ion battery technology, but also our detailed knowledge of relevant standards and regulations. This allows Saft to operate as an effective partner and support the development of cutting-edge medical devices,” said Thomas Alcide, CEO of Saft Specialty Battery Group.
