Microchip Introduces World's First Development Platform for 2D Multi-Touch and 3D Gestures

Microchip announces the expansion of its portfolio of human interface sensing solutions with the introduction of the 3DTouchPad, a PC peripheral and the world's first development platform for 2D multi-touch and 3D gestures.

The 3DTouchPad reinvents input sensing by adding everything from free space gesture recognition to projection capacitive multi-touch sensing as a compelling reference design and development platform. The 3DTouchPad is the first development platform that combines 2D multi-touch input and 3D air gestures especially for the PC/peripheral market. The 3DTouchPad provides robust and innovative 3D gesture recognition thanks to Microchip's GestIC® technology, which offers a sensing distance of up to 10 cm for 3D gestures, as well as Microchip's high-sensitivity projection-capacitive 2D multi-touch solution, capable of to manage up to 10 touch points and gestures on the surface with several fingers.

2D multi-touch capability is further enhanced by Microchip's new MTCH652 capacitive touch line driver, also announced today.

The new 3DTouchPad incorporates driverless and out-of-the-box features for Windows® 7/8.X and OS X®, 3D air gestures, advanced multi-touch capabilities including surface gestures, and a downloadable GUI and SDK/API package from free form tailored for developers.

The possibilities of this technology extend beyond the PC and touch screen computing market to include hands-free medical devices, home automation, remote controls, game controllers, portable devices and in-car applications. The production-ready development kit includes free GUIs and SDKs that enable innovative 2D and 3D input devices for advanced human interface designs.
