New COM Express modules from congatec with the latest Intel® Celeron®, Skylake processors

Congatec integrates today's most efficient Intel® Celeron® processor with fast DDR4 SODIMM memory support

congatec increases the scalability of its COM Express modules (Computer-on-Modules) with two new entry-level models based on the latest Intel 14nm microarchitecture (previously called Skylake). COM Express Basic modules and compact modules, based on the Intel® Celeron® processor, combine the performance of inexpensive dual-core CPUs with cutting-edge features such as multi-display 4k support, high-speed DDR4 RAM with higher bandwidth, and four USB 3.0 ports. This significant performance boost compared to previous generations of Intel® Celeron® processors is a huge performance leap for developers targeting the broad, and particularly sensitive, range of mid-range applications. Key applications for the new COM modules include all kinds of multi-screen 4k solutions, where an embedded computing module drives up to three independent displays without the need for a dedicated graphics card. Applications can be found in operating rooms and medical diagnostic terminals, HMIs in industrial machinery and facilities, digital signage, vending applications and retail trade, as well as gaming and information and entertainment terminals.

Technical innovations in detail

The new conga-TC170 compact COM Express module features the 2GHz dual-core Intel® Celeron® 3955U processor with a configurable thermal power design (cTDP) of 10-15W, which makes it easy to adapt the application to the power concept of the system. The new slightly larger conga-TS170 COM Express Basic modules are available with the G3900E Intel Celeron processor with 2,4 GHz and 35W TDP, or with the G3902E with 1,6 GHz and 25 W TDP. All modules support up to 32GB of dual-channel DDR4 memory, which produces significantly more bandwidth and is more power efficient than DDR3L implementations. The Intel® Gen9 HD Graphics 510 drives up to three independent displays with 4k @ 60Hz via DisplayPort 1.2 and 2.0 DMI. For better Windows 3-based 10D graphics, there's DirectX 12 support. Thanks to hardware-accelerated HEVC, VP8, VP9, and VDENC video encoding and decoding, it's possible, for the first time, to stream high-definition video in both directions with low energy consumption. The new congatec modules support COM Express Type 6 pinouts, including PCI Express Gen 3.0, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, SATA Gen 3, Gigabit Ethernet, as well as low-speed interfaces such as LPC, I²C and UART. The modules support Microsoft Windows 10 as well as all other current Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. An extensive set of add-ons to facilitate design, such as cooling solutions, carrier plates and starter kits, as well as the smart battery management module, complete the eco-friendly congatec.system.
