The new family of LAN8650/1 MAC-PHY devices connects low-cost microcontrollers without a built-in Ethernet MAC to a 10BASE-T1S Ethernet network

Automotive designers are creating new zonal architectures in automotive applications with 10BASE-T1S Ethernet solutions. 10BASE-T1S technology allows low-speed devices to be connected to a standard Ethernet network, thus eliminating the need for dedicated communication systems. Microchip Technology expands its catalog of certified Ethernet solutions for automotive and today announces the new family of MAC-PHY LAN8650/1 devices certified for automotive applications. These devices include the LAN8650 and LAN8651, which include a MAC (Media Access Controller) and an SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) to connect devices at the edge of automotive networks.

The LAN8650/1 devices, which integrate a MAC and an SPI, allow designers to connect 8, 16 and 32-bit microcontrollers that incorporate Ethernet MAC to 10BASE-T1S SPE (Single Pair Ethernet) networks. In this way, the sensors and actuators that link the digital world and the real world are part of an all-Ethernet architecture. Connecting to simpler microcontrollers can reduce the overall size and cost of a design.

These devices support TSN (Time-Sensitive Networking) networks that enable synchronized timing over long-distance Ethernet networks. This synchronization is essential in many automotive applications, for example in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

The automotive-certified LAN8650/1 meets AEC-Q100 Grade 1 specifications with high robustness in harsh environments, including an expanded operating temperature range of −40ºC to 125ºC. Additionally, the LAN8650/1 are functionally safe ready and designed for use in ISO 26262 applications.

Ethernet solutions continue to gain momentum in the automotive sector thanks to established security protocols to keep network systems secure. These systems can be extended to the edges of the network without the need for major changes or new developments.
