Anritsu launches high-output (4 Vpp) wideband 140 Gbaud PAM2 linear amplifier

anritsu linear amplifier

Anritsu Corporation has begun marketing its AH24B 1 Gbaud wideband/high output linear amplifier*15199 (140 Vpp) as of July 2.*1 developed to evaluate optical transmission devices in the generation from 1 Tera.

This new linear amplifier features a wideband frequency response of 200 kHz to 135 GHz with a bandwidth of -6 dB and can amplify PAM4 signals.*2 140 Gbaud at 2,0 Vpp. High gain amplification*3 +15,5 dB and low jitter*4 of 300 fs with respect to the actual signal timing allow even attenuated high-quality input signals to be amplified during transmission.

Additionally, the AH15199B can amplify 4 Gbaud PAM140 signals from various signal sources, such as DSP*5, and can directly control modulators and other devices that require high amplitude. Therefore, it is a suitable exciter to evaluate optical modulators for digital coherent systems.*6 of 800 GbE and 1,6 TbE, which are now in the spotlight as next-generation transmission systems, as well as for IM-DD systems*7 widely used in optical communications.

Anritsu meets customer needs by selling this broadband linear amplifier that supports the growth and smooth operation of high-speed networks.

Development background

Mobile data traffic is increasing with the growth of AI, machine learning and other services, but new increases in communication speeds for servers and network devices are a major challenge.

The next generation of the IEEE802.3 Ethernet standard for high-speed networks will use digital coherent methods, such as 800GBASE-LR1 (for 10 km), 800GBASE-ER1-20 (for 20 km), and 800GBASE-ER1 (for 40 km), as well as the IM-DD method. The OIF (Optical Internetworking Forum) is studying specifications for optical transmission technologies, such as 800ZR, 1600ZR, as well as coherent technology to support the increase in capacity of optical networks and accelerate the growth of systems "beyond 1 Terahertz" .

On the other hand, higher baud rates suffer from greater signal attenuation, so a high-power linear exciter is needed to faithfully amplify the PAM signals and directly drive the modulators.

Product Outline

The AH15199B high-power linear amplifier supports evaluation of 2,0 Vpp at 140 Gbaud PAM4 signals for high-speed, high-performance data transmissions with a low maximum consumption of 1,5 W. A data rate of 140 Gbaud is equivalent at 140.000 billion signal changes per second.

The standard, small, dedicated power supply reduces the risk of damage from improper handling.

Technical Terms

*1 Linear amplifier

Amplifies the input signal at a fixed ratio

*2 PAM4

Abbreviation for Pulse Amplitude Modulation used to increase transmission capacity by amplitude modulation using four voltage levels

*3 Gain

Parameter that indicates how many times the sinusoidal amplitude of the input frequency is multiplied at the output; It is represented as frequency on the logarithmic x-axis and as gain in relative dB units on the y-axis.

*4 Fluctuation

Parameter that indicates the quality of the digital signal as a time jitter; A larger fluctuation causes errors in the acquisition of the digital signal values.

*5 DSP

Abbreviation of Digital Signal Processor; microprocessor specialized for processing digital signals and generally used in real-time computing.

*6 Digital Coherent

Data transmission method that uses the phase and polarization of light to transmit high-capacity signals over long distances due to low signal degradation.

*7 IM-DD

Abbreviation for Intensity Modulation-Direct Detection (IM-DD); data transmission/reception system that uses changes in light intensity.
